There's a geopolitical aspect to this in that Venezuela is very cozy with China, who has been making moves into our hemisphere. See Vancouver, BC and the fact that multiple Canada MPs are known Chinese assets for an example. This sends a message to the region that China can't or won't help you and sends a message to China that we will fuck with their proxies. Will it encourage China to fuck with Taiwan as our local drunk thinks it will? More than they already do? Doubtful, Taiwan is a much tougher nut to crack and China doesn't have the ability or skill to pull off something like this. Or the will, if they fuck up they risk losing Face, revealing that they're not the 800 pound gorilla in the region and the perception of that is what China cares about.
