I feel the dog is an insight to Parents of the Year Rekieta and fat rat wife. She wanted a dog or the kids did so they got one, money no object, then dropped it off in a prison and semi forgot about it. The kids seemed to have lived a similar existence in some ways except he couldn't literally imprison them in a room with a toilet or a litter box so they occasionally intruded into his fantasy world while he was screaming at a screen and play acting.

Nick has said various stories, but apparently while he was away, the friend (or family member) who was taking care of the dog allowed it to ingest a "toxic substance", that resulted in Sunni being euthanized. He also relayed that he was late to stream because he picked up the body so that his children could say goodbye. This would have been days later, as he was in Florida for Christmas.

ETA: speculation is he fed the dog poison before leaving it with "family" , but there is no proof, and never will be
