How insightful or correct any of it was is beside the point, he offered a show back then. It was compelling or at least entertaining to many of us and I don't think he could match an average show from back in the day even if he somehow managed to get on his A game today.

I think some of it is obvious brain damage from substance abuse but I also think his heart isn't in it now. He fucked around with drugs and debauchery and hungers for that, it eclipses any desire to offer a good show and he can't fake it. Maybe years down the road he could put his addictions behind him and find that spark again but that would require effort and from all I've seen he's not actually trying to move past any of his predilections.
