Usually the only reason characters like that are even canonical teenagers is just because having the cast be in a school setting or some shit is just a very convenient low-effort way to have all the characters interact, whereas actual real-world adults usually have a 9-to-5 job. It's a common critique of American live-action shows that they always cast actors in their 20s to play teenagers and have the "teenager" characters act NOTHING LIKE real teenagers.
