That's a pretty big brained take there, Senator. The sad part is that he's not saying it because he's stupid. He's saying it because he's a traitor who is in bed with them.

Think about it this way. He didn’t start writing all that crazy shit until 1785, so like just as France was teeming to overthrow Louis the XVI, when all his kids were at least teenagers and out of the house.

So it’s very possible that he was doing an absurdist critique of French excess

Cool, I am sure most well known people collect a buttload of these throughout their lifetimes. Even the legitimate evil ones have a bunch of frivolous lawsuits levied against them.

So many young women get put on this shit when they don't actually need it, it's insane. Oh you're feeling very emotional during your monthly cycle of your hormones screaming at you to have children? No you need to be on antidepressants/antianxiety meds that turn you into an emotionless zombie. The doctors that prescribe this shit are fucking evil.

Turns out de Sade had to join the army at the age of 15 and fight in the seven years’ war shortly after. By the time the war was over, he was a cavalry captain at the age of 21, and had a reputation for fucking whores and gambling, which is not unusual for a soldier

He relented under pressure and took the marriage, and wrote letters to the effect that he was actually happy with his wife, and then, months after the marriage, he was convicted for the first scandalous shit

Reading what he was actually charged with, it sounds pretty fucking made up. Bear in mind that his replacement father figure and biggest booster in life was an abbot at this time

The theory I've heard is that he was hiding revolutionary messaging in pornographic texts so that people would read but not openly discuss it. So it was a way to create a silent consensus among the literate lower classes.

The last one is a bogstandard dental chair (Nothing obvious makes me think anyone was strapped down... I hope). Dentists have long been associated with sadism, and the faces are weird, but what REALLY gets me are the two umbrellas in the umbrella holder on the right.

Ahhhh the biggest problem with his history is everyone who had any kind of institutional support went in to theorizing about him to appropriate him to this or that cause. He switched sides a lot, and I think the only through line is resentment towards authority, especially after his first charges against him seem to me to have been revenge for an insult
