I think it's a complex of factors but simply put: People like Nick, and Ralph, don't have real friends. No true confidant, no one to truly open up to. No one to be vulnerable with. But generally speaking we all have a need to do this, to confide in others, to trust someone. These clowns have only each other. It's a group of befuddled losers, in the friendship sense. So despite their shifting alliances and rotating dramas, they see in each other a peer, a fellow traveler, and they confide. And, much of the time they're fucked up on drugs or alcohol, and their judgment sucks. Good for us! They continually refresh the pool of lolcow content.

wouldn't be surprised if Kayla's family is telling her, to put it in financial terms, to "hold the line". To hold out for Nick to do something really retarded like get arrested again, so she can take him to the cleaners and get a nice payday out of it through alimony in divorce proceedings.

This makes zero sense. Nick's income isn't expected to rise. If anything, Nick doing something retarded hurts Kayla as his income goes down. If finances are the goal, her best bet is to get out when he's making money and supporting the family, not spiraling into the ground and potentially accruing debt like legal bills and tax problems. In addition, his obligation for child support will start going down as each child turns 18 and graduates high school. As a child over 12 and graduating, their eldest son represents over 20% of child support that will go away in a few months.

There is no "cleaners." I suspect she has a bigger support unit in minnesota than Nick. Her best argument would be that the children should stay in the trust house, that Nick the drug user and felon should move out have every other weekend with the kids. She should argue that the trust provided Nick and her with income so they could stay home w/ the kids and that should continue in the form of alimony. She should not wait. Taken to the limit, if she waits another 8 years, she's entitled to no child support. Her claim on the house could be gone as she quit-claimed her interest to the trust.

If she wants any money from Nick's trust, she really should try to get it as child support as that comes with a host of repercussions for non-payment like jail and arrest. Once the kids are gone and child support ends, I'm not sure how she forces Nick to pay if there isn't wages to garnish. Either way, she needs to do it sooner rather than later. Later isn't going to be easier.
