"Woke" has become a meaningless buzzword to grift off the right wing (that is, if you think the term had any meaning in the first place).
To a lot of weeb-adjacent anti-woke grifters, "woke" basically means desexualizing women (and children) in media.

It depends on your definition of "woke".
If by 1980s-2000s standards, then yes, Japanese entertainment was very woke; even a cartoon like Mobile Suit Gundam shat on the kind of ooh-rah patriotism most people had for their country, in favor of a unified human consciousness. (after being burned out of that in WW2, many Japanese viewed militaristic patriotism with pessimism and a jaded outlook) Women were placed in action roles once meant for men, you had women leading factions and movements, and of course, the aforementioned gay shit. Not to mention that more than one anime was about how we should take care of the Earth, Captain Planet-style.
But if we're to judge Japanese entertainment by the 2010s-2020s definition of woke, Japan might as well be in the Medieval era. Not only is the majority of anime content made for BOYS who want masculine, macho heroes, but even most of the gay shit exists so that straight people can have a stiffy. A majority of Yuri/lesbian content is either hentai or hentai-adjacent; it exists so men can get a stiffy. Same thing for Yaoi/male gay content: it's not there so that gay men can identify with something, it's there so that sexually frustrated women can get themselves wet.
Something like Bayonetta or Final Fantasy XIII would be woke by the standards of the former, but regressive by the standards of the latter.
It's just like the real-world Japan; back in the 1980s, they were considered futuristic, now, they're considered antiquated.
Not to mention the fact that capitalism is either just accepted as a fact of life, or in shows like DBZ and Zeta Gundam, the capitalists save the fucking world. Capitalists gave the heroes their fancy Gundams to fight against the Space Fascists of Neo Zeon and the Titans, and a capitalist invented a time machine so that a Super-Saiyan half-breed can go back in time and save the world. Communism is never considered as an option, neither is socialism. At most, they're portrayed as either radicals or losers.

A lot of the games I liked from the old days could be considered woke nowadays. Mass Effect and KOTOR had gay romances, Starcraft, Halo, and Bayonetta had the religious guys be the bad guys for at least a good chunk of the series, many Star Wars games had you supporting the female-led Rebel Alliance against the nationalist, male-dominated Empire, the Transformers games definitely had villainous Megatron be the more masculine "alpha" type when compared to Optimus who usually just does his Robot Jesus shtick, the list goes on and on.
Back then, they only called something woke if it favored SJW-tinted arguments too much. Now? Give a woman any kind of special authority or place, and it's woke.

Just noticed something curious. So, we all know who Mamdani is and stuff, yeah he's a Muslim and shit. That's not the case. I'm talking about how they talk about women.
Every single fucking time a woman claims she voted blue, these people will always screech shit like: "Repeal the 19th!!" or write fantasies straight out of Ao3 about how they will get rapedkilledcannibalized by a big ethnic man if they don't vote red.
Or, in more extreme cases, how women actually vote for destructive policies because they enjoy being raped so it's okay if violence happens against them because "they voted for it."
But then, in the same breath, they will turn into HUGE Feminists about how they're not like those Muslim barbarians (even though they want the same thing but with the cross) and how they're against violence against women (yet don't seem to give a shit when a girl is raped by a relative or someone they knew) or even worse, ban them from going to college. (Taliban, anyone?)
It's like they're a bunch of jihadists but just happen to dislike Islam.

At least some of them like Andrew Tate made the logical next leap and converted to Islam to satisfy their sexist fantasies. It's the ones who still pretend to be Christian that bother me. As a Christian, you're supposed to see the dignity of God in each other. They wish to rob women of that dignity and remove from them the freedom of choice that God gives to every human being. Then they turn around and say that they're better than the Muslims, when what they want isn't Christianity, but Islam with a cross.

The old Westboro Baptist Church people videos (which are mostly banned) eerily remind me of trump supporters today, especially the behavior of Shirley Phelps. This was the pre trump era but goddamn, the way Shirley talked about gays and the other groups her and her family despises was just like trumpers today. And back then the Phelps family was deemed "deplorable" by even right wing Christians.
