Not a gun person because lol UK but what's the point of having essentially a rifle in pistol calibre? A normal rifle will do better range and damage and if you're that concerned about close quarter fights would you not just get a p90 or whatever

Sorta correct. That's why military and LE agencies are moving away from pistol-caliber carbines like the MP5. The technology for shorter-barreled rifles in intermediate calibers is being more fine-tuned as time goes on.

P90's get overused in media compared to the real-world. They were made in the tail-end of the Cold War as personal defense weapons for back-line troops, and its bullet (5.7×28mm) was designed to pierce the body armor of Warsaw Pact forces.

They're not really useful for Joe Gun Owner unless you really want one. The ammo is expensive. There's a joke that if you carry a gun in 5.7×28, you'll lose less money if you just give the mugger your wallet.

The velocity increase, while there is not as pronounced as you would expect. This is due to pistol powders being engineered to fast burning due to the short barrels used in pistols. For instance 9mm when shot out of a PCC will only see a jump of 200-300 fps while increasing the barrel length by 3-4 times a pistol barrel length. You still get the accuracy that goes along with 3 points of contact and longer sight radii. Over all a PCC is just a rehashing of the submachinegun concept that was on its way out in favor of SBRs in the 2000s.
