I genuinely hope Trump keeps a set of diaries, he seems to be one of the more thoughtful recent US presidents. Obama is too manufactured, Dubya is too subdued, Biden has nothing to him. He's no Marcus Aurelius but the way he's openly changed since the first term and his attempted assassination seems to have made him more introspective.
What gets me is that he survived his attempted assassination by a few millimeters in an open miracle but he still doubts that he's going to get into heaven. Any normal person would be convinced that they're chosen by God and Trump has a huge ego but he's openly rejecting this role. Why?
Christianity teaches that only by the grace of God does anyone get into heaven. And God only chooses to do so because He loves us.
From the clip, Trump seems to think he's irredeemable for whatever reason, and is trying his best to prepare for his inevitable death.
According to a quick Google search, Trump identifies as a "non denominational" Christian, which basically means he believes in Jesus but he isn't sure which church is correct on all the details surrounding what is or isn't a sin, what rules are followed, which books are part of the Bible, etc...
One of the main differences between Catholicism and Protestants is that Protestants believe that good works do nothing for your soul, only God has the power to bring people into His Kingdom. Catholics don't necessarily disagree, but they believe that good works can strengthen your relationship with God, and thus make you more likely to go to heaven.
Trump doesn't seem to be sure what he believes here, but he surely knows that having 100% confidence that you're going to heaven is indeed a mortal sin, because you're essentially taking God's grace for granted. Perhaps he was feeling pessimistic that day or was simply joking. I can't say for sure.
I'm thinking Trump saw his survival as some sort of "last chance" offered by God. A near death experience can be humbling in the grand scheme of things.
