Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Wasn't the word "toxic" invented by a league designer dev who was an Asian manlet with anger issues?
Not invented but popularized by Jeffrey Lin (Lyte), mr phd himself. Riot hopped on the tumblr bandwagon earlier than the rest of the industry and a lot of their language policing and whatnot predated GG.

After 10-15 years, we're finally coming full circle. USAID was cut, the money is running out and now dsygenic freaks like this are finally being cut like the excess weight he is. Even if gaming lobbies don't improve, AI will still take his job of banning people for no-no words.

"community managers" in the future will be AI bots that scrap information from all over the internet, no more fuck-ups/do-nothings that are liabilities.

They're fucked no matter what happens.

I dont know if this qualifies as unpopular but I miss the days of actually having to hook up your system to an old CRT to get it to play, in the days of Emulation I feel something has been lost in the beauty of firing up a cartridge game, it doesnt work so you clean it with an alcohol drenched Q tip and pray to God it works

And Lyte himself also quietly disappeared once people found out that he was also the exact same asshole shithead to his GF.

Dark Souls 3 is on par with 1 in quality for me
The Last of Us was always mediocre since the beginning
Megaman X4 is better than the SNES X trilogy and I think many prefer the latter due to nostalgia or contrarianism because they dislike Zero as a character.
People that complain about the state of gaming yet still buy it full price consistently are worse than corporate shills.
"Get woke, Go broke" is coping as seen by shit like Kingdom Come 2, and anyone who spergs about MUH FIGHTAN WOMYN WOKE in a fantasy setting (or when it's minor to the plot overall) should be mocked.
Frankly, the live service model has succeeded. It's flushed out the others. It's proven to be the only way, realistically, you can make a game with a $100m+ budget successful. In the pre-live-service era, getting more than 20 hours out of a video game was a rarity. Only hardcore Quake and Starcraft nerds played the same game over and over for years on end. Now, if your game isn't going to provide a solid 200+ hours of continuous content updates, forget being seen as a major event, you're going to live on the clearance rack.
I'm not sure considering how many live service projects got cancelled or failed hard since the niches they were trying to occupy already have strong competitors that won't be dethroned soon, or those niches stopped being money printers already (like what happened with Battle Royales and Hero Shooters)

Just because your favorite NFL team went 2-14 this year doesn't mean nobody won the Super Bowl. The only way to $100m+ revenue is the live service model. Nobody makes that kind of money with PS2-style one-and-done releases.

And having to seat the cartridge just right and blowing into the NES to appease the gods to make it work. Just firing up the system and hoping it paid off is something kids today will never truly experience or appreciate.

Bad comparison because it's not just a single one that failed. For each Fortnite or Marvel Heroes there are 3 or four failed or cancelled projects on the vein, and that's only counting the ones from well known companies. I'm not saying live service games are dying but they are not a guaranteed money printer for companies and investors anymore, which is why the cancellations.

I’m a huge soulsfag, but I swear to Christ Elden Ring was the best example of the Emperor’s new clothes I’ve ever seen in vidya.
>The Open world was mostly empty,
>The day night cycle changed nothing except some mostly arbitrary enemy and boss spawns
>The online and PVP an objective downgrade from DS3.
>Game was way too easy to cheese with ashes
>100+ bosses but they are all just “boss” versions of normal enemies
>The tombs are garbage and unfun, but you have to do them if you want to get good items
>Retread of the same NPC quests
>The endings were inexcusably lazy

I could go on. It was so bewildering seeing so many people say “OMG BEST GAME EVA”, when it feels like an objective step down from the other games.

I hated that fucking game. Everyone said it’s great. Just mid slop. Another game I hate that the internet thought was great: prey 2017.

Also couldn’t get into hollow knight. Great crafted game but not for me.

Me: "You cannot live in Lubbock if you don't live in Texas."
You: "That's not true, living in Texas doesn't guarantee you live in Lubbock."

Elden Ring was fromsoft watering their own formula down to the point it comes off parody.

The Dreamcast had Sonic Adventure, Skies of Arcadia, and SoulCalibur, plus some enhanced ports of PS1 games. What did Jaguar have?
By tradition: Tempest 2000, Rayman, and an Alien vs Predator FPS that afaik still hasn't been ported. So not quite nothing, for a console that exploded on the launchpad. Dreamcast had a lot more and sold like 35 times as many units, it's not really comparable at all. Sega was probably already doomed before it even came out, but the Dreamcast was actually getting along okay until the PS2 came out bulldozed it out of existence.

What pisses me off the most about the newer games is that they remove the small elements of the game that give them, well, soul.
>Shop keepers no longer call you rude for walking away in the menu
>No loading screen item descriptions
>Can no longer kill any NPC you want
>Covenants are completely gone
>Upgrade materials no longer have unique names for their level, now it’s just smithing stone 1, 2, 3, etc
>Can now just copy a boss soul without any effort or sacrifice (cause god forbid the player have to do new game plus)

Imagine being so tryhard pwning Elder Scroll fans and your franchise became the same.

I liked what i played but i agree I liked the Prey reboot more if i had to choose between the two. I don't have strong feelings of the big Soulslikes i just play what looks interesting which is why my favorites aren't even Dark Souls or Bloodborne they're Nioh and Sekiro

Lol why escalate to an unecessary /pol/dittor snark comment? You talk as specific live service games being successful means the format itself is a "success" when investors are not as confident with them like they used to be, and even the big names of this type are not as profitable as they once were unless you count Roblox.
