The price was a consequence of its design. There was a lot of expensive silicon in there that delivered poor results because of terrible system architecture. The lack of good games was also a consequence of its design. Its design and its marketing both go back to a failure to understand how home gaming and game development were evolving.I think the price could be overcome if they had good games and marketing.
It had so few launch games (ten before Christmas, not two) because of cartridges & treating developers like garbage. In an alternative universe where Nintendo didn't fuck up those two things, it launched with Mario 64, Pilot Wings, and so on, as well as Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Madden 97, and others. Having by far the best versions of these games does to the Playstation what the PS2 did to the Dreamcast.when they finally did launch the N64 it had just 2 games (even if one was SM64).
