The comment about nordic military and beards was funny as I've been a conscript in one and we once spent 10 minutes waiting for our weekend leave because 1 guy with turkish origins had grown unacceptable stubble since the same fucking morning and the lieutenant wasn't happy with it, so the whole company had to wait while he went to shave.

As Secretary of Defense he should be thinking about the entire Defense enterprise over the next 20-50 years, but he's thinking about the kind of reports he had to hand in when he was a platoon leader, and reliving the speeches he no doubt inflicted upon his soldiers.

I think this whole charade was about the lackluster parade. In their mind, Trump and Hegseth were expecting a bombastic performance, when it really was a pathetic tired display for everyone to see. Hegseth thinks (Trump probably doesn't care) that the display was because the "woke mind virus" infected the military and the top leaders let standards go, like lazy NCOs.

The more painful reality is that the 20 years of GWOT was not consequence free. The attrition of the Armed Forces was extreme, and the constant expenditure (and corruption) prevented things like maintenance or renovating old equipment and basing, and better care of service members who were rotated from deployments and a host of other things that an Army needs money for but was burnt in the ME.

The only reason the Military is running at all is because the crazy amount of man hours required from everyone to keep the machine limping on. That creates its own set of problems (suicides, substance abuse, etc). If you guys remember the Potomac disaster, that was caused by a crash of a blackhawk of the 160th SOAR (the best helicopter regiment in the Army), but what was hushed was that 13 days ago, another 160th SOAR Blackhawk crashed, killing everyone on board. If the TIER 1 (which is a funding category) SOF Enablers like the 160th SOAR is falling apart, imagine the rest of the Military.

The Military is in a dillema. US foreign policy basically depends on it being able to be a World wide spanning force. Right now, it does not have the money, the morale or the tech to do it succesfully, or at least without unacceptable attrition. But they can't neither pull out of the ME (Israel), or leave NATO, or leave the Indopacific (Australia, Japan, Taiwan).

In his mind, Hegseth thinks the Military is what it was in 2005, when he was deployed, but a lot has changed in 20 years, and not for the better, and of course he is too dumb and drunk to know better.

This constant bitching about cities is exhausting. I can't speak for the east coast but west coast cities are pretty okay.

They have their issues, there are of course the bad areas, but it's definitly something that doesn't require the military to come in and do what the police are supposed to do.

Portland one gets to me because I was down there this weekend when he announced he'll be sending troops to the "war ravaged" city, yet I'd step outside our hotel and it was just a sunny day and people doing their thing.

I honestly feel like I'd find myself quicker in trouble in small butt fuck nowhere opioid hellscapes than I would in general San Fran or Seattle, and even then the military has no business using Anywhere, USA as a training ground.
