I believe you. But I also think that some people just can't handle the gruesome visuals of slashing themselves open and somehow can't get the idea out of their head that because something is less visually shocking, it will also be less painful. It's a failure of thinking that just doesn't have the experience or imagination to really grasp how agonising dying slowly through an overdose might be. But they understand that cutting themselves is painful and scary. Swallowing some little white pills? Why it's almost like taking vitamins.
