US Trump links autism to Tylenol, urges pregnant women not to take it

President Trump on Monday warned pregnant women to limit the use of Tylenol, reviving a contentious debate over whether its active ingredient —acetaminophen — is linked to autism.

Why it matters: Trump and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made broad assertions about the cause of a condition that affects about 1 in 31 children up to age 8.
  • They also touted a little-known drug called leucovorin as a way to decrease the symptoms of autism.
Appearing with his top health officials, Trump tried to make good on Kennedy's pledge to uncover the source of autism by September and promoted ongoing research into the condition by the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies.
  • Trump said the FDA would issue a notice to physicians about the risk of acetaminophen during pregnancy and begin the process to make a safety label change.
  • "With Tylenol, don't take it, don't take it," Trump said, adding that pregnant women should limit use unless it's medically necessary and consult with their doctors about using it "if you can't tough it out."
  • He said federal health officials would instruct clinicians to exercise best judgment to prescribe the lowest dose of acetaminophen for the shortest duration.
  • Trump also warned of the dangers of administering multiple childhood vaccines at once, saying that shots should be administered over four or five visits.
The Health and Human Services Department, in a statement, caveated the connection between acetaminophen and autism.
  • "It is important to note that while an association between acetaminophen and neurological conditions has been described in many studies, a causal relationship has not been established and there are contrary studies in the scientific literature," the department said.
Kenvue, the maker of Tylenol, said in a statement that it believes scientific evidence clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism. "We strongly disagree with any suggestion otherwise," the company said.
  • Some studies have found that prenatal exposure to the pain medication increased the risk of both autism spectrum disorder and ADHD.
  • But a large study of data from more than 2 million children in Sweden concluded in 2024 that there was no connection, instead pointing to possible genetic factors.
  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists earlier concluded there's no clear evidence of a relationship between prudent use of acetaminophen and fetal developmental issues.

I’ll just leave this here for posterity. It turns out that the Tylenol company, all the way back in 2017, said that Tylenol isn’t recommended during pregnancy.
this seems like pretty standard "We don't recommend using our medication while pregnant. Consult your doctor before use." legal liability disclaimer that every NSAID manufacturer uses, not some glaring admission on whoever is writing their tweets that acetaminophen/paracetamol will add an additional chromosome to your unborn child.

Tylenol (and by extent brand names like Advil) cannot legally recommend their products to pregnant women because their products aren't clinically tested on pregnant women, that's why they always refer to check out with your GP/doctor because they're at liberty to vouch for the safety of paracetamol/ibuprofen.

The virtue signaling I've been seeing ... The comments saying stuff like "Let's not be bigots against autistic children, accept them for who they are, and love them."

Nobody is saying to hate autistic children with this announcement about the potential risks of Tylenol, lol.

If there are tangible links to autism, then shouldn't we know about them? If I had a child with autism, I wouldn't love them any less ... But wouldn't it be good to know what may cause the condition so that they can lead an easier life if possible?

These comments are just like saying "You know, if you tell pregnant women they can't drink alcohol even with the links to fetal alcohol syndrome, then you're causing a genocide and being a bigot against children with fetal alcohol syndrome."

That said, I also acknowledge that the studies about the links to autism and Tylenol are flawed (and they're flawed mostly because you simply can't experiment on pregnant women lol). All Trump said was "Well, if it were me, I wouldn't take it because of the potential risks."

People should just calm their tits about this whole topic and exercise some fucking common sense about the stuff they put into their bodies. End of story. lol.

The fact that the study itself outright says they couldn’t find a causal link between Tylenol and autism has me wondering if Trump and RFK are trying to funnel customers into some new pharmaceutical company
Eh... I don't think so, personally. I think Trump just wanted to sound like he had the answer, when what he had was a handful of studies that showed it might be worth further investigating if Tylenol increases the risk of autism.

Maybe it does by a few percent, or even double, but the absolute risk is still relatively low from this. All kinds of things are touchy during pregnancy, and it seems like they are always adding more. I don't really have a horse in this race, like probably try to minimize any drugs during pregnancy, to be safe, but if you get a fever it's still probably better to take the tylenol.

Apparently advil is counted as safe until 20 weeks, too. Which is, oddly specific.

This is actually a multidimensional chess by Trump to make his opponents go yellow. "Tylenol causes autism" -> libtards take more Tylenol -> libtard livers fail -> libtards turn yellow.

Masterful gambit, sir.

Shitlib women are apparently actually killing themselves and their unborn children to own the chuds now, if this tiktok foid is to be believed. There's a reason Pride is known as a DEADLY or MORTAL sin.

Liver failure is an awful, slow and painful way to die. Good luck to them.

I mean, these are the same people who told pregnant women to get an experimental vaccine a few years ago. Excuse me if I'm a little skeptical.

Also, the "experts" told people in the 1950's that cigarettes were helpful for asthma and were safe for pregnant women. Just saying.

With or without all of this dumbass hysteria, it's just common sense to take as little medicine as possible and to only take it as needed (especially during pregnancy).

I'm also seeing a lot of flat-out misinformation from media figureheads (wow, shocker lol). Yes, inflammation is a huge risk during pregnancy ... But Tylenol isn't a medicine for inflammation in the first place! NSAIDS are (and NSAIDS are an adamant no-no for preggos). Tylenol is a pain reliever and fever reducer (which can be very helpful for pregnancies, especially in the event of a fever), but to act like it's this super safe miracle drug for pregnant women to take every single day is just irresponsible.

If the drug is known to cause liver failure due to long term use or just overuse in general, then wouldn't common sense at least tell you to be careful with it during pregnancy?

I'm just astounded by how stupid people have become. There's zero critical thinking ability for these people.

Yeah. It’s not THE cause of autism, but it may be A cause or contributing factor and that is enough to be wary.

Ditto various morning sickness remedies, even after thalidomide, some of the other things they prescribe can cause defects and yet were deemed safe before.
I'm no doctor believe it or not, but the less of any of this shit you in your body the better unless absolutely necessary.
This is the correct way of looking at it.
All medicines have side effects and benefits.
Almost nothing medicine wise is totally safe during pregnancy
Caution to be used - decide if the risk outweighs the benefit. A woman who literally cannot keep food down and is losing weight dramatically should be offered medication to reduce nausea for example, or if she has a huge raging fever it needs to be brought down and if a couple of paracetamol/tylenol do that then fine. You wouldn’t take anti nausea medication for mild normal nausea or tylenol constantly. This is sensible, and it seems to be what’s being suggested. We’ve lost all proportion with this polarisation in politics

The amount of stupid bitches downing 10-20 Tylenol with no fucking clue that they just destroyed their fucking liver, or their baby's liver, is astounding.

The amount of retarded women on Twitter and FB going "I WAS TOLD IT WAS OK TO TAKE!!!"

The amount of retarded women on Twitter going "LOL, It's Tylonel, it's harmless!!!"

G1n4MlyW8AAxrne.webp

RIght fucking there.

And I've seen these stupid bitches going "I AM DOCTOR AND ME NO THUNK LITTLE PILL BAD FOR YOU!!!"

You just know if Trump told these fucking retards, who have NEVER had any consequences for their actions, that Thalidomide was bad for them, they'd be digging in landfills looking for 40 year old injectors.

Goddamn, there's a reason that every fucking society on Earth treated women like retarded pets.

Could Tylenol cause autism? Quite possibly, haven't reviewed the studies but it should he investigated.

Am I going to blindly simp and trust the guy who wanted to make Asbestos legal again? No.

Yeah. It’s not THE cause of autism, but it may be A cause or contributing factor and that is enough to be wary.

AFAIK the jury is still out but whats most annoying is not whether or not tylenol can cause autism. Its that now that the Orange Man has spoken people are just going to rush to their respective sides to build a fort.

But especially on the left where the bearded professors and so called experts and bemedaled professional health organizations are just going to now come down on the side that its completely harmless just to be the opposite of whatever Trump just said. Professionalism counts for nothing, science and expertise counts for nothing, nuance counts for nothing, the mountains of writings before count for nothing ----link --- heck even what you were saying or thinking 1 second before Trump opened his mouth counts for nothing. Its all about Trump and the 'experts' are not only not immune they're at the forefront of the derangement.

Trump Derangement Syndrome is so terminal that I wholly believe that many people would suffocate themselves with plastic bags if Trump said that plastic bags were unsafe to wear over your head.

The dumb bitches who are going to end up in the ER for Tylenol overdose are likely the same dumb bitches who wrote off Ivermectin as "horse paste."
