US Trump links autism to Tylenol, urges pregnant women not to take it

President Trump on Monday warned pregnant women to limit the use of Tylenol, reviving a contentious debate over whether its active ingredient —acetaminophen — is linked to autism.

Why it matters: Trump and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made broad assertions about the cause of a condition that affects about 1 in 31 children up to age 8.
  • They also touted a little-known drug called leucovorin as a way to decrease the symptoms of autism.
Appearing with his top health officials, Trump tried to make good on Kennedy's pledge to uncover the source of autism by September and promoted ongoing research into the condition by the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies.
  • Trump said the FDA would issue a notice to physicians about the risk of acetaminophen during pregnancy and begin the process to make a safety label change.
  • "With Tylenol, don't take it, don't take it," Trump said, adding that pregnant women should limit use unless it's medically necessary and consult with their doctors about using it "if you can't tough it out."
  • He said federal health officials would instruct clinicians to exercise best judgment to prescribe the lowest dose of acetaminophen for the shortest duration.
  • Trump also warned of the dangers of administering multiple childhood vaccines at once, saying that shots should be administered over four or five visits.
The Health and Human Services Department, in a statement, caveated the connection between acetaminophen and autism.
  • "It is important to note that while an association between acetaminophen and neurological conditions has been described in many studies, a causal relationship has not been established and there are contrary studies in the scientific literature," the department said.
Kenvue, the maker of Tylenol, said in a statement that it believes scientific evidence clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism. "We strongly disagree with any suggestion otherwise," the company said.
  • Some studies have found that prenatal exposure to the pain medication increased the risk of both autism spectrum disorder and ADHD.
  • But a large study of data from more than 2 million children in Sweden concluded in 2024 that there was no connection, instead pointing to possible genetic factors.
  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists earlier concluded there's no clear evidence of a relationship between prudent use of acetaminophen and fetal developmental issues.

After a measles outbreak in Texas he encouraged people not to vaccinate (the measles vaccine is safe, proven effective, and infinitely better to catching measles) but to take vitamin A. This is the kind of retarded shit your uncle who believes he can win the lottery by "finding a pattern" believes. I think he means well but is a genuine moron, which is to say you have a lot in common.
Aren't measles & other curable disease outbreaks the result of illegals entering and their countries' abysmal healthcare and sanitation?

I don’t get why people are assmad about this. They aren’t even making it prescription. They are literally just asking for pregnant women to be careful with drugs. You can’t do trials on pregnant women, so you can’t know for sure if a medication is safe anyway.
Except the covid jab. That is absolutely safe and effective for pregnant women.

Well, shit, I guess all those FAS babies just need to get the fuck over it. Alcohol is quickly metabolized by the mother's liver, after all, so there's no way it could permanently affect the foetus.

ED: To clarify, all the effects of NAPQI toxicity listed there are remarkably similar to the physiological effects of chronic alcohol abuse. This is a big part of why you're not supposed to use Acetaminophen while drinking or vice-versa.

PTFE, its precursors, and its decay products are known mutagens/carcinogens and are likely also neurotoxic, so despite your snark, this is actually plausible.
PTFE is reeeeeally inert and doesn't bioaccumulate.

You're probably thinking of PFAS.

I already low key avoided paracetamol because everything it does, ibuprofen did better and with less risk. But autism? I would have guessed being born with a weak fucked up liver would have been its foetal risk. Also its really faggy how much big state media here is rushing to DEBOONK trump over this, its a mild painkiller, not a life saving or health improving drug.

I think I have an explanation for this nonsense. Trump and his junta are christian nationalists and they hate women with a deep passion. The bible dictates that they must suffer the pain of childbirth. Meaning, this is just a roundabout way of preventing women from making pregnancy more easy to handle.
What if there actually just are no safe painkillers a pregnant woman can take, and anything you can do to make pregnancy easier carries unavoidable risks for the child? What if it's not Trump's fault, but the fault of God/nature/science, and it's unfair but still true? Many like you seem unwilling to entertain this possibility

There have been plenty of studies that suggest a relationship between APAP use in utero and rising ADHD/autism rates.

There are also doctors who have been talking about this for years.

Granted, there are no studies that show a causal relationship. bevause it’s hard and because drug makers for very good reasons aren’t interested in funding those studies.

The hell did women do for thousands of years before war and corrupt industry normalized women working like men?
Some things were better, some things were worse.
Brett Weinstein had some professor on his show the other day and they spoke a bit about autism research. Everything from processed foods to sleep apnea are linked to autism (aka being fat)
Yeah, the ‘tism like so many other things doesn’t have ‘a cause.’ It’s the end result of multiple things that fuck up the normal development of the baby.

Yes!

Also yes. Despite it causing a massive fever (remember fever bad for pregnant women and reduction of fever is one of the reason you’d take paracetamol, welcome to clown world.)

This is probably the sad truth. And it’s why the concept of minimal dose for minimal amount of time is useful.
I’ll just leave this here for posterity. It turns out that the Tylenol company, all the way back in 2017, said that Tylenol shouldn’t be used during pregnancy. However, the post was deleted for some reason.
The fact the progressive are fellating Big Pharma as hard as they can is a matter of great surprise to me. Pharma companies are the embodiment of evil, and yet the extreme left has done a 180 on them and now considers them part of the IFLscience cult. I hope whoever socially engineered that got their pay rise

Unfortunately probably how it is. Pain is intentionally hard to block, it's how you know there is danger. The painkillers we do have are either hyper addictive or have immense side effects. Why is Tylenol different?

And why is the advice of using the lowest dose possible only when you NEED IT such a sore spot? If you are guzzling Tylenol like water, yes that is bad, whether you are pregnant or not, that is a fuck ton of chemicals.

Personally I'm glad the Administration is trying. This hits home for me because I have autism. It isn't the end of their research either. It's the start. This is the moment where the Surgeon General said smoking fucking kills you. They still had to do tons of studies after the fact. But the evidence was there

There's probably enough of these that at least a few of the people that do this are going to have autistic kids by probability alone. They'll be no way to actually tell if the tylenol caused it but I hope they get this shoved in their face when their kid is diagnosed regardless.

But they are owning trump!

I'd say it serves them right except it's the children who suffer most. Most moms will avoid absolutely everything they can out of an abundance of caution, even stuff like ice cream, meanwhile these bitches are mainlining DRUGS to own random strangers online.
"Ah but we've used it for a hundred years!"
You know what humanity has used for thousands? It was deemed a miracle substance immune to fire, made of strong weavable fibers, and flexible! The romans made their clothes out of it, we used it in recent times for insulation in anything from oven mitts to ceiling tiles to firefighting outfits!

We call it asbestos. All you young trendy liberals who love re-using and reducing waste, pick some up today, you can find a ton of it used for free!
