IMO Two possible reasons that Leftists are doing this:
(1) Leftists think they're rebels who have to fight whatever the government says because if they don't the government will make 1984 realz.It's baked into their rhetoric ("We have to fight!"/"They are taking away our rights!") and so on, so they've basically fallen for the whole "say a lie enough times and it becomes real" but on an existential level because politically they all view themselves as Jews in 1932 Germany or something due to the rhetoric of celebs and influencers.
TLDR: They're in a state of perpetual LARP where they're the rebels fighting an evil regime.

(2) Since they only get their news exclusively from news headlines and left-wing sources, they believe that the Right has been doing what they're doing now for years, which they would know isn't true if they actually engaged or peeked into right-wing spaces, which they absolutely refuse to do.

Correct. Mussolini was a Socialist before he invented Fascism. Fascism was envisioned as "better Socialism."
