I anticipate that the initial false narrative about the shooter being a right-winger will stick now that it's been spread all over the place. I think most people will say, "Wait, he was a progressive? But I heard he was right-wing. Hmm, I guess it's unclear." Not everyone can be expected to dig into these issues on their own initiative, and the news media aren't doing their jobs, so it seems inevitable that many people will end up with a false or confused understanding.

I think the message from the shooter about "I had enough of [Kirk's] hatred" clarifies the motive pretty well.
