Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

I don't need social media features, I don't need DRM, I don't need any of the shit Valve wants to force onto me
If you think a chat client you never need to open or activities page which you never need to open are being forced on you, maybe Steam isnt for you. Same goes for DRM, theres plenty of DRM free games on steam, and in general I think devs use the SteamAPI incorrectly which makes anything linked to any Steam DLL's act like DRM when they could just as easily make it work without. Either way if the games you want are Denuvoless, its easy enough to replace the broken ass SteamAPI implmentation with something like the Goldberg Emulator.

What kind of a faggot are you? Steam doesn't do any of the complaints you have about it unless you make it. Steam launches when starting windows and stays invisible. When you right click the icon you can go right to library and pick a game to play. No adverts any where, no social interactions and you can appear offline and private profile so no one can ever see you exist on the platform.
it might be like for me where steam launches up and a popup will show up once steam has launched fully talking about something like a sale or a game being out. i have no clue how to turn this off in particular.

under interface in the settings menu, untick the box that says something along the lines of "notify me about new releases and changes to my games."

edit: @Achtung Bitter, would you care to share with the class how I'm incorrect? That is how one turns that shit off, you irreversibly dented faggot.

The best method to tard wrangle Steam is to put -silent in your start menu link.
Now Steam starts in tray without ever popping up.
Just syncing your saves and patching your games as a launcher should do.

Still, as long as you don't use Linux or SteamInput, portable executables and the possibility to easily roll back the game version renders GoG superior.

I don't really enjoy modern Nintendo games.

I can't put my finger on what exactly it is, but pretty much across the line up of franchises, I'm either so disinterested that I don't even know what's coming out, or the games I have tried have just been huge let downs.

Luigi's Mansion 3 just didn't feel good, and left me bored.

Pikmin 3, I was getting to the end of what I thought was an extended railroad tutorial, right when I thought the game was about to open up and let me off the rails, and then the credits rolled. Saw my friends kid playing pikmin 4, and couldn't believe how "cutesy" the tone was. In the first game, Olimar would write diary entries, talking about how he was going to die alone on this strange planet, never seeing his family again. Or expressing the guilt he felt, watching the local race he had enslaved as soldiers, dying on his behalf by the dozen.

I've never been huge on Mario, and while the variety of world's was cool, odyssey just felt bloated and tedious

Zelda was one of my favorite franchises growing up, but I honestly just don't get the hype for breath of the wild. It feels aimless. And while in some ways, the open world exploration is a return to form, at the same time, it just doesn't feel like a Zelda game at all. Tears of the kingdom, I haven't played, but the whole "building" mechanic is just a headscratcher for me.

Ironically, I think one of the big criticism for most of Nintendo's IPs is how derivative they've become, so its a real let down that Zelda is probably the one they're experimenting with the most, and it just falls so flat for me, while being so seemingly successful. I'd also say that historically, Zelda has been one of their more experimental franchises. Links Adventure, link to the past, that gameboy game that was a dream, ocarina, majoras mask, wind waker, twilight princess, even those DS games, all felt like they were innovating, but still retained the core experience of a Zelda game. While I didn't like it much, even skyward sword feels like Zelda. Breath of the Wild feels like a starfox adventures situation, where they just slapped the branding onto an unrelated game late in development

I'm not huge on pokemon, but I loved Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, so you'd think the switch games might appeal to me more... But not really

The only reason I own a switch is because a friend just gave it to me, along with a couple games. I've had it for probably 3-4 years now, and I'll occasionally try to get some use out of it, only to inevitably realize I'm not really interested in the first party titles, and I'd generally rather just play third parties on PC

I'm sure nostalgia plays some factor, but I don't think its the main element. I can go back and play classic games that I didn't play as a kid, games from before my time, or games from consoles I didn't own, or genres I didn't play. I can even enjoy a modern game from other devs on occasion. Something has just shifted in the design philosophy of Nintendo that's made me lose interest

It could be worse, I guess. At least they're not crammed full of micro transactions
The switch era has been the weakest era of Nintendo. It's not as bad as it could of been but it's mostly been so-so outside of Mario Kart 8 deluxe and Smash Bros Ultimate.

I don't man, that Wii shit was pretty bad
I'm assuming we're talking console only, not generations, because you had the ds going on at the same time as the Wii, and that has one of the best handheld libraries out there. The Wii still had mario galaxy, rythmn heaven fever, punch-out and wario ware smooth moves. That period from around 2012-2016 I still hold as the weakest years for nintendo. So many games were blatantly unfinished (that mario tennis game, mario maker 1) or outright bad (star fox zero, animal crossing board game, mario party) and sequels to main franchises lacked the originality of the previous gen (smash 4 Super Mario 3d word, nsmbu). The only games I think are truly great that were original to the wiiu were, Mario Kart 8, tropical freeze.

My unpopular opinion is that modern hardware doesn't have a stick drift problem. It has gorilla handed players problem who treat their controllers like shit and damage them.
I got drift on my joycons within a few months of light use despite treating the sticks like newborns. If I treated the sticks any gentler, I'd look like I was having a fancy tea party with my Switch. I have been gaming since I was a retarded toddler and never had this issue. Even my 20+ year old controllers don't have this problem.

If you have to treat a controller like a baby to mildly reduce the chances of drift, the controller sucks.

The basic premise of Metal Gear Solid, which is that a mech with a railgun that can lob a miniature nuclear warhead 20 or 30 miles or so is a game-changing superweapon, is so fucking retarded that it is impossible to take the game's story seriously from that point forward. Plus the rest of the story is fucking retarded.

That's not an unpopular opinion. The consensus on Kojima has always been that he's incredibly creative but cannot write a coherent or realistic narrative or characters to save his life.

Dude badly badly needs an editor/tard wrangler but his narcissism would never allow that.

I have this opinion about the price of videogames that has been met with opposition. I believe that the amount of hours of entertainment one can get by playing a game is ultimately the deciding factor in how expensive it should be.

Think of any other leisurely activity that costs money. The cost of going to the cinema can range from 10 - 50 dollars depending on the area you're at and the quality of experience, but it's only for a few hours of entertainment. People are going to the movies less because of this and they're gravitating towards subscription services or just renting it on Amazon and even that's getting too expensive. This can apply to other things like concerts, conventions, state fairs, etc. Games are a bit different in that they require more effort to get enjoyment out of them, so 3 hours of entertainment is basically nothing, but personally my rule is that for every dollar I spend on a game, I should be getting AT LEAST 30 minutes of entertainment out of it.

Game costs 20 bucks? I should be able to spend 10 hours on it without getting bored. 60 bucks? 30 hours. Games are going for 80 bucks now so I should be able to spend 40 hours on that. MINIMUM. That's where I draw the line when deciding if a game becomes overpriced. If I spend 20 bucks on a game that I put 80 hours into, then I got a great deal or I like the game THAT much. I've told this to other people and they don't like the idea because it sounds like it's justifying an 80 dollar price tag. My feeling on that is this: if a game has entertained me for 40 fucking hours, then...welllll yeah the 80 dollar price tag actually is justified. I can't think of any other paid form of entertainment that could keep me engaged for that long for less money. The real issue is that these games WON'T keep most people entertained for that long, so the 80 dollar price tag can still be considered a rip-off and probably is. Others have said 'just pirate it' but pirates will download anything even if it costs 20 cents, however even they will buy something if they enjoy it that much and want to support the ones who made it to reward them for their efforts. Still, 80 dollars becoming the standard is something that bothers me because I prefer NOT to spend 40 hours on a game, I'd much rather buy 4 games that cost 20 than one that costs 80.

Then the consensus is cope. Kojima is not "incredibly creative;" he's retarded. You can't edit stupid ideas into good ideas. A story with a retarded premise remains retarded no matter how good your writing and directing is. MGS2 is clever because it calls the player a faggot over and over, but MGS1 is just dumb.

In movies, an example of a movie with a batshit retarded premise that is somehow saved by everything else coming together is National Treasure. I mean, it's "saved" in the sense that it's a fun watch, but it's still completely retarded. On the flip side, a movie with good, creative ideas that is destroyed by terrible writing and directing is Star Wars Episode I.

I could never get into the series because of the convoluted plot. I also don't like the tonal sinusoid of high ranking soldiers and covert agents fighting vampires, flamethrower wielding astronauts, and mooing robots. I know it's Japan, but it's just too much. I don't want to watch 5h+ of cutscenes of that shit.

What kind of a faggot are you?
uhh... funny story that one.
also i prefer steam having a "monopoly" over games store than anyone else, for now that is, lord knows what will happen once gaben croaks.
i wouldn't trust GOG to remain "DRM free" if it were on steam's position since people wouldn't really have other options since the competition is basically what steam had thought a long time ago and concluded it was retarded to do because it's consumer unfriendly shit.

My controversial opinion is if you treat Diablo IV as an online slop game and don't pay any extra, get it on discount or through an online service, it's pretty fun. Yea it's not a classic like the originals, but it is tons of fun if you like dungeon crawling.

A PSX remaster drops, I know it'll be $30, 9 hours of content and I won't feel remotely swampy by its graphical "features".
The game I enjoyed most so far in 2025? Onimusha 2, a re-release from 2001/2002.

Simple, fun, rewards skilled sword kills, daft, big and memorable characters.

It’s one of the few PS2 games that isn’t great to emulate because of the original pre-rendered backgrounds looking shit if you attempt resolutions higher than 480p - so the re-release of it on Steam is an absolute godsend.

Back when MGS2 released, the junior me loved everything wacky and basically wanted every video game to resemble a playable version of Ninja Scroll.

But even then, I found MGS2 far too fucking ludicrous, namely:-
- Fighting a skinny negress who is so ‘lucky’ every bullet you fire misses her 100%, while she can wield an enormous rail gun and kill anything that moves
- Repeatedly fighting an invincible gay vampire
- Controlling a character (Raiden) who can single-handedly take down a Harrier jump jet
- Fighting an obese man on rollerskates

I know we can similarly break down any game and without context, intellectualise how stupid it is; but MGS2 really does feel like a series of bolted-together ludicrous ideas from the very worst of Kojima’s autistic shit-fits, which his superiors were too afraid to reign in.

All that said, I do like the game mechanics. But when the stupid, endless dodge boss battle vs. Fortune starts, it really is time to turn the fucking thing off.

Not only that, but he claimed in interviews that gamers not respecting his retarded bait and switch with snake and Raiden in that game was proof that "games can't be art" or something. Kojima isn't a total hack, but he is definitely an overrated autist.

Nah. If you were one of the few people who actually bought a WiiU, I could maybe understand having a more dour outlook, given the amount of rereleases; Still, there were way worse Nintendo eras. E.g., In terms of game libraries, the N64/GB era is one I don't find myself returning to very often, if at all. While there were good games on the WiiU/3DS, both of their respective gimmicks failed so one could make an argument there.

In that vein of thinking, I see Kojimbo as a creative savant like George Lucas who has interesting ideas but needs a tard wrangler to prevent the bad ones from being included alongside keeping the project on track. Death Stranding is Kojima's SW prequels.

I like Switch more more than Wii & Wii U at least, those were both very mixed bags, especially Wii U. They're all still pretty good though.

I heard it's censored but I don't know if it's only sexual content.

N64 I kind of understand, even though I like it, but GB has a lot of great stuff. Is it the graphics?
