While I won't go as far as clear-cutting, proper logging is vital for getting the so called "fringe" of forests back where there's trees and undergrowth. Think the tree-line not-hedges farmers plant around their fields. All sorts of wild game absolutely love logging roads to live around because it offers the cover of the forest with all the shoots, ground foliage, and other goodies of an open meadow. Deer are a fucking menace on the roads here, and one of the suspected reasons is the throttling of logging forcing deer, who generally don't like foraging in old growth forests since the trees grow so tall it's hard for grass to grow, to go search for food outside of the forests.
You need to do more than that. A lot of forests there from what I know that got declared old growth forests... they're stuff like jack-pine which actively wants to get hit by lightning and start a forest fire. Turns the forest into fertilizer for their seeds. Great life cycle if you want logging trees, absolutely horrific if you want to save muh forests, because if Zeus decides to show off a party trick of his there, you will not have forest, you will have a fucking mile-wide fire.
