The reality is deportations will be the smallest direct impact on reducing the number of illegal immigrants. Even just the fear of being deported will make more leave than the deportations themselves. Making it painful to hire them. Painful to house them. Painful to illegally live here will have a much larger impact than any amount of deportation could. And thankfully it does seem like the administration knows this and is working to achieve it.

What I can conclude is that he wants to hide it because several of his associates are listed in the files, as well as him traveling to the island. Or he knows that there is nothing in the files/nothing he can do about the people in them so he is telling his followers that it was all a hoax.
