Automaton West: Japan’s Niconico sees paid subscriptions decline following credit card restrictions and adult content crackdown (archive)
Kadokawa’s financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2026 reveal that overall revenue from its major video-streaming platform Niconico has been on a decline (source: Otaku Soken). The company attributes this primarily to a recent decrease in premium paid subscriptions, caused by credit card payments being suspended on the platform for months.
From May 2024 to February 2025, no credit cards except for JBC were available as payment options on the site, which Kadokawa thinks has driven some members away.
