There's a few theories but the one that makes the most sense to me is Dick's coffee grift failing while Eric is successful. I would have no idea who the fuck Eric July is if Dax hadn't tried to force him as some epic lolcow. Myself and I'm sure everyone reading this, when someone is pointing going "LOOK LOOK AT THIS MELTDOWN!" I tend to take a glance. Yet all I see is some nigga who makes mediocre comics but still is making fuckloads of money without really chimping out.

In hindsight it's funnier to me July is successful, because as others have said, he's completely BTFO comicsgate in a fraction of the time. There are various lolcows that still get hundreds per month from patrons and they haven’t released anything in years. Maddax got most of his patrons from the lolsuit where people thought he was some free speech advocate. We all know of Dax’s antics but most people don’t. So they donated a few bucks a month to fight the good fight and then ignored it. Most of the drop off is from people who checked their account and saw they’re still donating and stopped it. That’s why it’s been a slow and steady decline. He’s lucky that he sees this amount of support.

Now if patreon did one of those forced "confirm opt in to our service" thingies for some regulatory reason, the subsequent losses to various lolcows would be fucking hilarious.....
