Currently having to try 5 or 6 times to get anything to load in Freetube. yt-dlp straight up can't get HD downloads at all.

I am going to punch Neal Mohan in the dick over the internet. See if I don't.

EDIT: Disregard that I suck cocks. Upstream has fixed it, repos are just out of date. I'll still dickpunch Mohan for free though.

Not sure if anyone else has run into this issue, but it seems YouTube's update on the backend has messed up something with the audio. My latest downloads are rather muted. Nothing that a little boost to the audio can't solve, and I am certain that an update will fix it in due time. (Edit: Forget I said anything. Turns out it was an update to MPV of all things that screwed the pooch. I have no idea why, but the latest update on my end messed with the audio levels. It's fixed, for now.)

Still, I've been making efforts to target certain playlists that I can stuff into my drives while I still can. Keep archiving and downloading, do what you can to preserve the shit you like so it doesn't go to dust.

In the meantime, allow me to share a few videos of interest that now hold a place in the disks of my hard drives to balance out some of the grimmer news we see as of late.

If I may submit a humble request, I seek more to add to my drives. While I am still in the process of sorting out my archives, I am still on the hunt for more stuff to cram them with that my feeds may not be privy to. Just by logging on to old YouTube accounts, I get a blast to the past that more modern feeds would never provide, even if I searched them out deliberately. While we are still able, I suggest we also make use of this thread for more recommendations and the like to share that may be worth preserving.

https://kiwifarms.st/threads/favourite-old-internet-stuff.131984/ already exists for some the old stuff, but I figure it wouldn't hurt diversifying the use of the thread in terms of the newer stuff that YouTube has to offer, even if those offerings grow slimmer by the day. As for right now, I am currently on the hunt for filling my drives with some Newgrounds classics, be they new or old. If by chance anyone has a good playlist going, I would be most pleased to see it submitted here. There are some suitable playlists and the like to be found on YouTube, but YouTube search engine is just plain shit for finding stuff older than a couple years old or whatever the algorithm wants you to see. As I have stated before, the YouTube search engine has an extremely potent recency bias, making it difficult to hunt for older works if you don't already have them favorited or put into a playlist already. So in the interest of getting to those works before something inevitably happens, it would be much appreciated if any of you wish to share more of what may be out there, old or otherwise.

I know I am preaching to the choir here, but for those of you that still have yet to engage in archiving your favorite shit, allow me to present you a sample from one channel's videos that have definitely disappeared off the clearnet that only hold a home in my hard drive.







I have not been able to find even one singular reupload of any of DeeDaRabbit's videos. As far as I know, I am the only one who has the latest copies before he abruptly nuked his channel. It happened with little warning, besides one community post mentioning his worries of being nailed by an overzealous Nintendo issuing copyright strikes. As far as I can tell, he nuked his channel before that could happen, leaving no trace to either him or his videos. Again, I am preaching to the choir, archive the shit in your playlists. Even if you only have a 500gb hard drive on a shitty laptop, you can still get a decent start restricting yourself to 720p. It ain't the best, but at least you have something of relatively decent quality that can be played on such devices. In time, you can always upgrade to a bigger external 1tb drive to expand your storage needs. It's what I've done to start out with, and it will hold as a good stopgap till you are able to secure something more substantial.

In the end, only you can personally assure that something is archived and available to you. Even if others have made their own backups, there is no assurance that they'll make those copies public. Take action accordingly and make your own.

On a side note, if anyone can link to an appropriate thread or otherwise where I can dump an archive of said Star Fox videos, I'll happily post what little remains there.

If you like morrowind this one is really fun, I got lucky and managed to download it a few days before the guy who made it took it down. You can't post it to youtube anymore because he put a copyright claim on it, I tried a few times but without much luck.

I feel tha this thread would be appropriate, sinc even a Star Fox thread would be a little off.

I also stored the Haluciraptor film in one of my playlists. I should ge to downloading more of them.

Mmm, that is indeed part of the issue when it comes to any potential reuploads. Take AMVs for instance. While I was never very invested into the AMV scene, I do have fond memories of going on early YouTube and spotting a few amateur but earnest efforts slicing together the songs of the day with any number of visuals. Some of them were actually even good. But the very nature of those videos meant they were more or less doomed the moment YouTube began to gain more notoriety in the public's eye. Oh how I wish I knew some means to actually save and download videos from back in the day. I was vaguely aware of programs like FRAPS and Hypercam2, but my understanding was those needed to be paid for, or otherwise needed something I was not able to provide. For context, I was just getting online for the first time around this point, so my tech knowledge was in the dirt as far as combing for suitable websites and/or programs good for the purpose. But if I could go back in time just for a moment with something like YouTube-Dl/DLP? I would harvest loads upon loads of videos that have since been deleted for over a decade and a half. Those videos weren't much by today's standards, but they had heart and soul put into them. Even with the advent of the YouTube Creator program and the like, those videos that were made simply to be shared and appreciated still dominated. I mentioned it back in the Old Internet thread, but I still want to find a way to grab some of those videos that are so tantalizingly close, ones that have been privated, yet could still remain *somewhere* on YouTube's servers.

Oh well. I have the memories, even if they grow a bit fainter with each passing year.

Speaking of the Elder Scrolls, I have a channel that might also be right up your alleyway.


Jodzie makes decent Daggerfall machinima of all things, splicing dialogue from the games seamlessly to the point where you would be hard pressed to tell the difference if you weren't already familiar with them. It hearkens back to the old days when Gmod and TF2 machinima were starting off, so that's always a plus.

For whatever reason, I found excellent results in garnering playlists when I searched this video upon Freetube. It doesn't always happen, but I usually try to save those playlists for later reference when it does.

It's a bit of a pain to go through the videos though, seeing as I like to archive channels en mass if I can help it. Problem is sorting through the playlists. Tartube probably has a function to auto create and sort such videos into the appropriate folders, but I prefer to use the classic YouTube-Dl interface, seeing as the main one for Tartube is fussy about creating its own database for the purpose. But it's otherwise worth the effort, having it secured on my drive. As for posting more Star Fox videos and the like, I'll be happy to post more here, But do you think the main Nintendo thread would also be appropriate for the task?

Either way, I'll post a couple most whilst waiting for a reply.

You might be already aware of this, but using search modifiers can help you find older videos on YT. before: YYYY-MM-DD and after: YYYY-MM-DD can be used along with search terms, and both before: and after: can be used together, for example Tokyo after: 2016-01-01 before: 2018-01-01.

You can sometimes actually get Google to show results that YT's search won't show (for some reason) by using Google's built-in date selection in the "Tools" menu, so it's worth trying that too.

Oh I am aware of it, but I appreciate you pointing out some of the finer details nonetheless.

Lately though, I have found even this method has become... Inconsistent with what results it returns. It still works for the most part, but I think YouTube fucking around the backend again as far as the search results are concerned. Nothing too bad as of yet, but I am wary of what the future will hold if YouTube decides to lobotomize its search function even more than is now.

What I would really like is some way to sort the sidebar feed of videos and have a way to filter out stuff from before or after a certain date so different results show up. Primarily, I want something to emulate and imitate what the feeds/algorithm of a certain period of time would have been like to better locate and find stuff from that era. To my knowledge, there have been a couple projects that attempt this or something similar, such as StarTube initiating the old UI and some basic feed mechanisms, and I found this github whilst stumbling around for a solution.


I haven't checked too deeply as of yet, but it seems all the "easy" solutions have since gone defunct. You can host your own instance, but it seems the instructions are geared for Windows users. There might be a workaround for Linux users such as myself, but that's beyond my technical capabilities to solve. Startube does fill the void at least a little, but it seems this project would fill in that cap as far as local algorithms are concerned quite nicely.
 
Is it just me or does YouTube punish people who have ad personalization turned off by showing them disgusting/lewd ads instead? I disabled it on an old Google account a few days ago and ever since then I've been seeing ads for ED pills and scantily-clad ugly yellow women.

I haven't seen an ad on Youtube in 15 years. That sounds like hell.

like 2/3 the ads i get are either temu trash or NSFW AI bots

Does YouTube moderate shorts? I was watching some gaming videos and some shorts got recommended to me. One had bare tits and the other one had a naked e thot in bodypaint.

I don't watch porno on YouTube and even if I did I wasn't signed in at the time.

I don't understand how vids can get blocked or age restricted for profanity but shorts can have explicit nudity.
