At one of the "serious" events, that would be 100% legit and in line with spirit of what DEFCON & such should be about - using what you have access to, exploiting any weakness, and trying to fuck over the competition anyway you can, the more ridiculously petty the better.

I would guess that was around the same time that 1o57 stopped doing the badge challenge. All of those psychoholics guys are friends with 1o57, and he was notoriously bad about procrastinating the badge challenge stuff. So usually the first couple puzzles were pretty well thought out, but it very quickly degraded into riddles fueled by whatever music/movies/tv he was into at the time, which people close to him would have knowledge of, and thus be able to abuse. He also was ironically kind of gullible, so I don't put it past any of them to abuse their personal relationship with him to get ahead in the challenge. We already know Jason did by abusing the trust 1o57 put him in the one year.

That makes a ton of sense. His connection with 1o57 is also probably why he was invited to the Council of Nine.

It's the largest open to public CTF in the world. It's an interesting event, attracts some legitimate geniuses, but there are private CTFs and BBs that nations engage in with their agencies (like wargames but with the cyber divisions). A friend of mine was in Singapore for one, came back to his hotel room, and the cybersec team from another nation was cold-war style bugging their room.

At DEFCON you'd have a laugh, maybe involve a PM or organiser. In this case, both teams (they're not called that, but think of them as teams) had to report to their fed agencies as well as the conference host's agency.

Having helped both run some CTF style contests and design some puzzles (over a decade ago, though), the hardest part is to make stuff solvable by enough people to maximize the amount of people having fun (I had a friend/acquaintance who enjoyed soloing through competitions just to crush the hopes of hopeful tween haxxors, though, so it was a balance putting in something to slow people like him as well since we had actual cash prizes and whatnot).
