So if he is making $2000 once or twice a month and minimum wage (or possibly even less depending on how shitty the contract is) for the rest of it, that's barely livable given his impending move, his debt, and general living expenses. And what happens when his dry spell lasts a little longer than usual?

When you're working in an industry where work availability or successful completion of sales lack consistency, it's super important to budget wisely, have a fat savings account for emergencies and unexpected expenses (or dry spells), and no significant outstanding debts. Otherwise, you can find yourself at rock bottom or even the negatives very quickly.
