Look at any YouTube channel with a successful Patreon, and most if not all will have two things in common: they're not constantly begging you to pay them, and they're actually making things people want to support. Frequently, they won't even mention their Patreon in the videos themselves, just a link in the description. There's a scale to this, of course; for some examples, DankPods rattles off a quick blurb over the names of his top supporters, RLM posts a link as a title card at the very end of their videos (and they haven't even made a video mentioning their Patreon for the better part of a decade now), and Bobby's arch-nemesis Critical Drinker doesn't even bring it up at all. But more importantly, they're all making stuff people like, and those people reward them with funding.

Bob is just so unlikable and stupid that he long ago hit his peak of support, and it's all been downhill from there. He would need to completely change who he is as a person if he actually wanted to get paid more, but since he lacks that ability of introspection, he never will.

Okay, here's the thing. I agree with this stance. It's why I don't go watch superhero movies in theaters anymore. But we've had gems before. Personally I was ready to give up back in 2018, then Infinity War dragged me back in. Then Captain Marvel kicked me back out. Then Spider-Man 2 was an improvement on the first one and I had hope. Until Black Widow finally came out and it was just meh. I watched most of the movies and shows afterwards until I realized I only liked two of them, Spider-Man No Way Home and Guardians 3. There were parts of Wandavision, Hawkeye and Falcon and Winter Soldier that I liked. But overall the past five years have been bad.

And that's the problem, the gems. The knowledge that Marvel did it before and that there's still potential here for them to do it again. Like an abused spouse, the nerds keep coming back to get their hearts stomped on because they need to believe that this time, it'll be better. And it won't.
