Is he huffing nitrous? It seems probable because he's retarded enough to believe it's safe, he knows it won't show up on a drug test, and the cops found ketamine in his house which is also a dissociative, but the thing that makes me question it is how fucked up he sounds on stream. It's not like he's huffing nitrous balloons on stream, so unless he's been compulsively redosing all day before the stream, it's hard to believe the effects would last so long. You can have lingering effects from nitrous if you abuse it, but if you just slam one balloon of it, the effects will dissipate pretty quick. Also, his voice is so fucked up that doesn't seem like nitrous would cause him to sound like that, unless he's REALLY retarded and huffing the freezing cold gas straight from a cracker/dispenser and directly burning his throat with the cold gas.

I have been a bit unplugged from the Rackets lore as of late, but just doing the bit of catch up that is required here. A common person wouldn't think of even attempting to be inhaling fumes to that degree, but all things considered the guy by his own admission didn't drink until 35 and didn't start doing drugs till 40. So if anything, the burn out cycle is if anything amplified 20 fold, because at that point in life you shouldn't be aspiring to live that type of life style. Any sensible person unless in a comfortable bubble, doesn't deliberately go out of their way to abuse these type of things in their late 30's going into their 40's. You're right. I know Nick isn't worthy of concern or sympathy. And if he got drunk, got behind the wheel, and wrapped himself around a tree, I wouldn't feel the least bit bad for him. This is something I've wanted to discuss for a while, so pardon the passing relevance to your comment, you just reminded me to type it out.

I think a significant part of Nick's motivation for using drugs goes beyond mere addiction and the pursuit of pleasure, and goes back to becoming a parent of multiple children while clearly not having the heart or interest for it. We know Nick is a selfish man, that he primarily understands the world through his own needs and feelings, that he resents having obligations to his kids and community, and it doesn't take a significant leap of logic to imagine that he developed his 'narcoleptic' nocturnal drug habits as a means of wresting back some control over how he spends his time. And I'll be fair to him - being a parent myself, I fully appreciate how the few nighttime hours you have without children can be relaxing, cathartic and productive, that's not a problem in and of itself, that's life. The problem comes from thinking that he can 'beat the system' using a chemical cocktail that will largely defeat the need for sleep altogether, giving him an ability to live two lives, one where he's the trad, homeschooling father that drives his keedz to all these wonderful activities, and the other where he's the slick, online libertine who LARPs as a lawyer. If he kept to a normal schedule like any other working American, only one such life would be possible, and it'd be the one where he's forced to live for the sake of others - no wonder he gave up his legal practice the moment he could.

This is what I see as the heart of his drug abuse and why I don't think he's going to recover. If the problem was just a passing addiction to cocaine like he claims, sure it wouldn't take a lot to come clean given it's not a particularly addictive substance. It's his failure to fully embrace his role as a father and husband, and the two-faced daily schedule that failure demands, that's significantly contributing to his need to abuse drugs, and no doubt Kayla's withdrawal from family life too. If he just swallowed his pride and gave up the internet personality thing, and better yet, got a real fucking job, he'd have no need to be abusing stimulants so severely that he's catching three hours of sleep a day (total junkie behaviour btw). Yet what we see is that, despite having months to sort himself out, he's back at the late-night lawyer charade and appearing just as erratic and wired as before. It doesn't matter if the PO doesn't catch him, his life's fucked if he keeps living in denial like this. He's quickly becoming an old man; this is not the time to be abusing whippets and legal meth like you're twenty again.
