I don't think it rules out an emotional affair. It would be just like Nick to obfuscate the truth by throwing out all of these other things infidelity can hypothetically be. A lot of people don't believe in emotional affairs, or at least the line between friendship and emotional affair is subjective enough that different couples might have different boundaries. Whereas a physical affair is a very straightforward form of infidelity, you either had sex or you didn't. Personally I think she started talking to some guy online (star trek man?) late at night while Nick was getting drunk on stream and the kids were in bed which possibly snowballed into Nick deciding it was his turn to do all of the things he thinks he missed out on by marrying her, and probably convinced her that it was really about saving their marriage.
