"Internet friends" can be very much real, although it is exceedingly rare - and unhealthy "friendships"/"relationships" far more likely than wholesome ones, given that those who spend enough time on the 'net to actually interact with someone to the degree a meaningful connection can be formed are... often special, to say it mildly.

You are absolutely right the Farms is an extremely poor environment to make such connections though. It's a bit of a shame because you can interact with really interesting people in here, especially in some of the slower, more niche threads where there are a couple of well-known regulars and discussion is generally well thought-out and engaging. But it is what it is I suppose.

For a bit of anecdata (with a side of powerlevel), way back when I was a teenager I met a guy my age playing an MMO that was popular at the time - think WoW or the like. We partied up a bunch of times, somehow made it into a regular thing, and the friendship persisted well beyond the game. Dude's from a different country but we've met IRL a couple of times, spent a week or so vacationing at the other's place. Still talk to him occasionally, to this day.
