Tales of the Competency Crisis - How do I into anything?

I am a staff level software engineer. This past week I have been helping another team interview candidates with a strict technical requirement. Meaning that the hire must absolutely be able to perform some basic programming skills specifically in Python and SQL. If this is not your area it doesn't matter. Suffice to say the need of the team is someone they do not have time to teach these things in addition to teaching them the actual job of applying them.

So I spent 15 minutes writing 6 interview questions. 3 SQL and 3 Python. I interviewed three candidates. Two of them were recent computer science graduates from a well known Texas university and the third was a guy with a background in data analysis and a few years work experience. None of them were Indian immigrants.

Guess how many could even answer one basic question? If you guessed 0 well...
Out of morbid curiosity - what are the questions?

Sorry for the double post, but I have opinions to vomit.
I'm sure most of you here are at least tangentially aware of the New Zealand dyke wonderkid that managed to sink a 60-million navy vessel.

Well, they finally released the report about the incident. Here's a short-ish video about it:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=qwkGsfPJX20
a tl;dr of events:
- the autopilot was on the whole time
- the autopilot lets the crew increase or decrease the speed of the ship, but blocks off steering controls until it is shut off
- crew being unaware that the autopilot was on made the situation worse by attempting to go in reverse
- since they had no steering control this just made the ship go faster
- nobody on the bridge knew the standard procedure for emergency situations, where "check if the pilot is on" is #1 on the checklist
- it took them 10 minutes after the ship crashed to figure out the autopilot was on

Other highlights:
- the dyke captain had no clue about how the ship worked, having to ask one of her equally retarded underlings (who also didn't know)
- by that point she had been in command of the ship for 2 years
- during evacuation she tells the crew to go to the bathroom before boarding the lifeboats
- rescinds that order when she realizes there might be some degree of urgency necessary when evacuating a sinking ship

People, rightfully, joke that the Chinese military is rife with nepotism and corruption, but are Western armies any better? Over the past decade I've noticed an increasing number of ships with (minority or lesbian) female officers in charge colliding with each other or running aground and other increasingly retarded and embarrassing incidents, mostly involving non-Whites and women.

I don't think enough emphasis is being placed on the competency crisis in Western armies.
The military is this country is an underfunded joke and has been for a very long time. Our air-force is mostly for search & rescue and logistics and we haven't had a strike force in 25 years when we finally mothballed the Douglas 4K Skyhawks we'd been flying since 1970.
Our Navy isn't much different and considering how much everything was pozzed under the last labour admin (and continues under the current national admin), the fact that this cavalcade of retards ploughed into a reef is unsurprising.
Like every other western country for reasons no one can quite figure out our armed forces haemorrhage competent personal.
Might be an Kiwi thing to be overly polite and inoffensive. Up to the point where you can't ask your co-workers if they actually knew how to do their jobs, apparently.
More or less. I work with a chunk of incompetent dipshits, but straight up calling them incompetent dipshits and openly questioning why we had to import this level or retardation from overseas is considered bad form and racist apparently. As per usual the only honest opinions come out in private.

Out of morbid curiosity - what are the questions?

I wrote these myself so let me post them here. If you have no background in programming or anything I don't think you'll know them. But the questions were to see if you have a basic ability to write code in SQL and Python. This is stuff I learned in year 1 of a CS program 15 years ago.

1. This is the most basic one. I was shocked nobody was able to answer this completely. Not one.

2. The answer to this is a one liner. Not even a gay ass python one liner, a normal one.

3. More advanced question. Most entry level wouldn't know the answer to this. Not that they are expected to but if they did it would be impressive.

I feel like most workplaces nowadays function as little fiefdoms with their own little lords and ladies that you have to be buddies with if you want any upward trajectory
Typically these 'lords and ladies' have formed a group of lazy cocksucking syncophants with just one or two hard workers that are jaded and do the majority of the work
You dont have to be able to 'do' anything to get a job- you just have to be able to lie, suck dick, and be buddies with the right people- and for some, have enough money and patience and resolve to sit through the young adult propaganda and daycare center (college)
I am a shit liar and I will call people out on the spot for being shit but I am a hard worker, and I have valuable skills- Ive gotten so many jobs but I keep leaving because I just cant stand those people. I really dont care any longer, Ive had enough. I want to go 'little house on the prarie' at this point. Its all bullshit

This jives well with something old Sargon commented on. We all got mad at this dumb video from a few years ago. But never really took a step back and thought why. Dumb bitches being dumb yes but also dumb bitches getting hired and preferential treatment at all levels. Fast tracked to positions they don't deserve and in addition to that they just fuck off and lol about it.

As a senior level engineer with highly in demand skills I would expect to put out 200 resumes looking for a job if I don't use the old network I've established simply by working in the field for 20 years. But if you're fresh out of the gate? It's probably 1000 applications or more. Meanwhile dumb skanks just stumble into these jobs with everything stacked in their favor for no reason other than "women" or "minority" status. The 2010s will be known for this and now its deep rooted.

It sucks because I am a woman, and I was obsessed with computers since I was young- it was just a hobby, but I got headhunted because a family friend saw me once with my computer taken apart.
Ive left the field at this point and its just a hobby again now but Im kinda pissed that all this training I have is just a huge waste, I dont want to be a 'diversity' hire and treated like a child. Im sick to my stomach that companies have gotten away with paying men less in order to force women into the job market.

Those are not difficult. About the only gotcha I see on the first one is if they used an Inner Join, thus not allowing for the possibility of an empty order. Pandas isn't something I've used professionally but I can do it. And the third one I am sad if that is now considered impressive for an entry level programmer to know.

It absolutely does suck for a woman who wants to be judged purely on her own merits. Worse though is that it's usually the most talented women who get stuck without promotion because under DEI there's even more incentive to promote out incompetent employees who are female; or else move them around so they get the soft work. "Oh, I'll write the documentation," which usually involves just badgering the person who actually knows what they're doing but getting their name out on the front of the work. Or having "finished more tickets" because they're being given the make-work or easy stuff. Doesn't need to be a woman for this to happen, but if there are two women one of whom is competent and one of whom is DEI, it's the latter that will get it.

Its a good indicator if someone has written a lot of SQL as the row_number() function is not covered and if you have written a lot of it using it immediately is as clear as day and you can answer the question in under 10 seconds. I really like that question in general. CS programs seems to use python as the lingua franca. Their only interaction with databases proper is through ORM like SQL lite.

On top of that the AI age has them at a loss on what to do when someone challenges you knowledge. Or something.

None of those questions were supposed to be difficult. Just to gauge that you had enough basic ability to start working immediately without having to also learn the fundamental principles of SQL of all things on top of actually learning the job and applying these languages to solve problems.

The military is this country is an underfunded joke and has been for a very long time.
The same is true in canada, and the going theory on the ground is that the force simply does not and can not pay as well as the private sector for the level of competence demanded. Yeah, it's the military, but if you can make 60k/yr as a boatswain but also have to do managerial stuff and supply stuff and be away from home 8 months a year, or can make 65k and be a line handler for a local diving company, what would you pick? It gets worse when you have people told all they have to do is talk on the radio and suddenly they're badgered sysadmins, or you have engineers who were told all they'd do is make sure a 10cyl doesn't catch fire suddenly have to learn to weld and do their juniors' taxes.

Though I'd be wary of blaming indian imports for military underperformance, too; the military has always been the reject bin of the normal job market anyway. And bitching about military budgets is pretty wild; Aus and NZ are among the best paid militaries in the world.

I actually read about this one like a month ago in ProNotes, our internal casual naval officer coffee table magazine. I actually dug out that issue for this post. Between your video and my article, I think you're being a bit overbearing here.

There's a lot going on there that shouldn't have (or rather should have gone on that didn't) though. If they're doing route survey, they should have had anchor(cable) party closed up. It's weird that they were in auto rather than having a helmsman actively steering by hand (ship autopilots are notoroiusly janky). Turnover and even regular course input reports should include that the ship is in auto. There are multiple levels of failure, from the bridge team to the core design of the helm as it is from Thales or whoever. Thoughbeit:

>by that point she had been in command of the ship for 2 years
The CO was piped to the bridge at some point once the crisis was well underway and had reasonable initial actions (bring ship to emergency stations; order stop or reverse). The CO is requested to the bridge at 18:16:55 and grounding occurs like two minutes later. That's no time at all on the water.

>le go pee first :^)
The order to abandon ship was given once the ship was already stuck on the reef. This order was given with the understanding that the ship was stuck in place, not getting off the reef, and nothing was actively exploding yet. conducting the abandon ship as a "slow time evolution" at that point is reasonable. The ship is clearly not going anywhere and the order to make it slow time is rescinded once it starts going somewhere (down).

This dude in the video also gets a ton of stuff wrong, he can't even pronounce "pan pan" properly

It's very easy to figure out. National identity is undermined, values are undermined, testosterone has been in free fall for decades, feminist entryism has lowered standards. All of this also lowered the prestige/status, meaning it's less rewarding.

Sure, but my point is that she herself didn't ask whether they were on autopilot at any point during the whole debacle, had to ask one of her underlings for basic technical information on how the ship operates and, ultimately, she was the person in charge of the vessel, so any failure in training and procedure falls on her.

She had been in command for 2 years, yet her crew failed the most basic emergency procedure of which, as I said, the first step is checking whether the autopilot was engaged before doing anything else.

It's obvious she had been promoted well above her level of competent with predictable results, and you can try to justify her actions any way you want, but no amount of jumping through hoops can explain why none of the bridge crew went though a standardized troubleshooting checklist, which exist for these exact scenarios.

with the understanding that the ship was stuck in place, not getting off the reef, and nothing was actively exploding yet
How did they know that a fuel line had not been cut, or if wiring had been exposed?

I could understand telling the crew not to rush, since they were in no immediate danger, but ordering them to go potty is beyond retarded, and only something a woman would do in such a situation.

Acting so cavalier after ruining the ship just further proves that no one on that bridge should have been in command of the vessel, and making up excuses for their fuckups is pathetic.

"Up or out" is one of them, if you're that curious
Thats not just a military thing sadly.
Im kinda pissed that all this training I have is just a huge waste, I dont want to be a 'diversity' hire and treated like a child. Im sick to my stomach that companies have gotten away with paying men less in order to force women into the job market.
I've found that historically sex isn't much of an indicator of talent as I've met women and men who were literal geniuses and men and women who were total chair-warmers. I've found that it boils down to them being in it for the money or an interest in tech. If they're for the money they're going to be a total hindrance. If they're telling you about some hack or project they're working on in their own time regardless of scope - I've found they're good to work with.
Or having "finished more tickets" because they're being given the make-work or easy stuff. Doesn't need to be a woman for this to happen, but if there are two women one of whom is competent and one of whom is DEI, it's the latter that will get it.
Yep. I've seen more than one DEI hire promoted for the sake of it and others who were actually competent passed over. Usually the DEI hires end up in make work positions that benefit no one for some reason.
Though I'd be wary of blaming indian imports for military underperformance, too; the military has always been the reject bin of the normal job market anyway. And bitching about military budgets is pretty wild; Aus and NZ are among the best paid militaries in the world.
Oh I knew that years ago. I had a couple of acquaintances in high school who were absolute munters. A couple got into trouble with the law and another ended up joining the army. Dude was still a munter but allowed to play with guns. Last time I saw him a year or two out of school he was whining about being bored having sex with barracks bunnies and then pestered me for a ride back to base. I guess it's a small miracle we don't have MBT's, a Strike Force or any hardware at all.

The fact that he's being paid more than your average soldier scares me though.

How do salaries compare when you factor in our laughable exchange rate?
It's very easy to figure out. National identity is undermined, values are undermined, testosterone has been in free fall for decades, feminist entryism has lowered standards. All of this also lowered the prestige/status, meaning it's less rewarding.
I was being facetious, but you are entirely correct.

Give me an country and an number and I'll get you an answer

Millions spent on upper management updating software, policy and procedures, etc to roll out and implement the changes needed to let us go paperless. Want to know the new procedure? We now print everything, sign it with a physical pen and annotate as needed, scan it, and shred it. And even after a week or two of that, we had to go back to continuing to file and pay for physical retention of all documentation regardless anyway, because it turned out the workforce of 95% incompetent pajeet retards are too fucking lazy and stupid to scan it and ensure it gets electronically filed correctly. Extra work, extra cost, and extra paper. Jesus fucking wept.

Ostatnio edytowane:
I think it boils down to two things. Attention and curiosity.

More than ever, you're bombarded by those who want your attention. You are constantly ripped from email to text, tik to tok, tv to phone to smaller inset video. There are now less periods of time for quiet, unbroken thinking. What would have been a contemplative solo activity before is now interrupted half a dozen times by the noise.

It's easy to put up walls to these distractions, but many don't. If you're a kid, I imagine it's even worse since being plugged in is expected. Plus, every global tragedy or political outrage is immediately beamed into your pocket in real time, I imagine that might have some long lasting effects.

This leads lack of the second thing, curiosity. Why do anything when you can just watch somebody else do it? Why read a book when you can listen to somebody summarize it for you? Why hang out with friends when you can just watch other people stream? Why think something through when you can just ask chatgtp? They keep telling us the world is burning down anyway, so why bother.

Again, probably worse in kids, but we all seem to know people that lack any sort of rich inner garden.

This fracturing of attention and the lack of curiosity creates people who are unable to think for themselves, so they never bother to think about anything else.
