I think the thing you're not understanding is that a given game's reputation is kind of mixed in with their fanbase in the current years.
It's like VTubers. Technically even if the content may or may not be awful in and of itself, nowadays it attracts a certain kind of individual, that in turn go on to influence later iterations of a concept, and so on in a cycle.
In the case of games, what happened was that the kind of people into games enough to influence the writing or character design aspect grew up with them, and therefore exaggerate the aspects that drew them to such hobbies to begin with.
Sometimes that's good old-fashioned boobs, and you just get bigger boobs (and if you're lucky something to the character that isn't a deliberate rehash of some other character).
Sometimes that's fujoshi fanfiction, and you get Dragon Age the Veilguard.

You have the Raging Golden Eagles, Vee's and Mark Kern types doing that sure, but it is the alt-media types like Razorfist leading the charge on this.

It's because it full of nerds and geeks. Once considered outcasts of society so victimhood ideologies are ripe for the taking.

It's moreso that prior generations of game devs were introverts that aligned with libertarianism. They weren't explicitely right-wing, and the right was anti-video game for a while so it allowed leftists to feel welcome (at least once it wasn't so male dominated).

Why are RE4 onwards praised for being good games?
They were literally made with the (incorrect) assumption that horror is an obsolete genre and they need to be more like CoD; shooty shooty bang bang.

What I like about Kern and Asmondgold, is that people completely hate their guts and can't articulate why, just trailing off into incoherant tard rage that has nothing to do with the issue at hand. "But muh blood wall! Muh cockroach! Muh kickstarter game!" and that makes them wrong about [topic of the week] how exactly?
I didn't know Razorfist had a take on this. I'm guessing it's burried in some three hour livestream. What was his opinion?
And so they should. Christian or SJW. After a decade of uglification, two somewhat tame fanservice games sends them melting down on social media. Those kinds of puritans deserve to be poked in the eye.
Because they're good. Resident Evil 5 is a great co-op action adventure. The issues with the game are overblown. eg. "Sheva plinks away at the boss with the handgun instead of using the shotgun!"

RE6 is the game people said RE5 was, which is why you don't hear much about it. RE7 was a good return to formula and has some messed up scenes. The complaints about the lack of monster variety outside of bosses is fair, but you rarely fight anything outside of boss battles. Resident Evil Revelations I liked. Even Revelation 2, which was bad, had that amazing Raid mode.

I really wish Kiwis would detach their personal distaste from a product's actual success. Sales don't count, player counts aren't reliable, and my two buddies in a private discord aren't talking about the game constantly. Epic failure!!!!

Old RE fans kinda detached from the series after it became a shooty shooty bang bang zombie game for the CoD crowd.
Sure, it sold more copies, but it lost all its horror, and devolved into shooty shooty bang bang for the CoD crowd.

Old RE fans shit themselves in fury when RE4 released. They've clung onto an idea of horror that hasn't been present in this franchise since the original game.

Money doesn't always equal quality. Look at films. The Thing was a flop at the box office, but is one of the greatest films ever made. Meanwhile, some infamous stinkers like Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot, the Transformers movies, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and The Emoji Movie all made money.
Edit: Titanfall 2 might be a good game example. Amazing game, fucked over by releasing the week between CoD and Battlefield, with little marketing leaving people to assume it was Xbox exclusive like the first one.
People loved RE4. It was only later that people blamed it for the downfall of the series.

The RE games were critically acclaimed as well. At which point does denying a franchise's success become outright retarded?
And no, the discourse around RE4 was there from the beginning. A ton of people hated it for going in an actionised direction, but it turns out that kvetching was a comparatively small opinion.

The discourse was around AAA devs who decided the horror genre is dead. I remember a lot of AAA companies decided to make shooty shooty bang bang games with brownish aesthetic because CoD made money. RE was one of those franchises. RE3 is all dark and gritty; RE4 has that on-brand yellow color palette specific to that era.

Seriously. If you disregard financial and critical success, while shunting aside the size of a product's fan base, what exactly is the measurement being used?

The atmosphere and sense of dread the settings and encounters gave? Resource management also adds a bit to that, even though it's tedious...
Shooty shooty bang bangs are the equivalent of bing bing yahoos; you just have to point your crosshair in the general direction and the game aims for you. You just stick your child (sic disappointing son in his mid 30s) in front of a console and keep him glued for hours. Most console FPS fit this description.

People who complain online about something are a self-selecting group. Who's more likely to still post online about RE4 20 years after it came out, a normal person who enjoyed the game, or someone with an autistic obsession with the old 1990s games who is mad that they're not still being made?

How do you maintain an atmosphere of dread across multiple games when a precedent for firepower has already been set? You are vastly misremembering how long that "dread" persisted. Even the original RE games allowed you to brutalise your way through the enemy ranks when you knew what you were doing.
The franchise steadily ramped up the stakes because zombies just aren't scary foe that long.
You also avoided my question about success, by the way. Addressing only one aspect of a product's success doesn't answer what you measure it by.
