Same room, same lighting, right? Mugshot, so a few hours after the arrest. Google says MDMA, meth, stimulants, and coke can last that long. Anyway, Nick seems higher. (I couldn't see April's eyes well enough to tell anything.)

Not a drug expert but I've dealt with people on opiates and amphetamines.

Neither of those photos seem to exhibit effects of drugs. Opiates will cause pupils to narrow to points. Amphetamines blow pupils out. I wouldn't say either of those photos indicate drug use. They look like the range of normal dilation.

I grew up in a rural area. We shot crop- or livestock-damaging varmints on a fairly regular basis-- groundhogs and crows mainly, but also wild dogs and coyotes since they will sometimes run cattle to death, as well as feral cats that can wreak havoc on the game bird population. It sounds cruel but we used rifles--22 lr or 22-250--and always went for a quick, clean kill. The goal was to reduce their numbers, not torment them. What Rekieta did--the drowning and hammering bit--is puzzling since we know he owned firearms. I don't understand why he didn't just shoot them, which is far more humane.
