I don't personally buy this, but it's actually not too farfetched that the strongest country on earth, especially one this large and divided, wouldn't have some sort of corrupt political machinery behind the curtain.

Mass democracy is corrupt political machinery by definition and is most definitely fake and gay. Tammany Hall style gibs-machines still exist and run many states and cities throughout the country. But I would argue that, particularly regarding national elections, much of the west's political machinery is invested in media narrative control. Of course, when this begins to fail they can resort to bold-faced fortification, but I think we've just observed the limits of such methods in this very election.

Really, we're in this weird pocket where the old methods of managing democracy (media control and bribery/lobbying) are failing and the new methods (replacement migration and vote-rigging) haven't been fully implemented yet.
