Narcissists see themselves as the Chosen One, someone who is predestined to do something great, Main Character Syndrome to the extreme. That's Pat 100%. So if he's going to go out, he's going to do it in a way that he perceives as fulfilling his destiny. A lot of mass shooters are narcissists who think their crime will make them a martyr and serve a higher purpose - think Brenton Tarrant and other accelerationist mass-shooters who think their martyrdom will start a race war that re-arranges the world to their liking.
Pat is an angry drunk with a history of violence and he rages about politics 24h a day. He's boasted that he could do better than the guy who shot trump. Yes he's a coward, but mass shooters are cowards, they have a gun, their victims do not have a gun, they only kill people who are no threat to them. Doing something like that takes no courage.
If Pat snaps, I think he goes all the way. I agree he'll kill Nikki, but that will be one of those situations where the Feds find the first victim's body after the atrocity is over. Pat will go out and try to do something that changes the world - that's the only acceptable trade for what he sees as the most important person in the world: himself. Of course that will make Pat a household name, then people will go through his social media history and ... I don't know what they'll make of it. But like all mass-shooters or assassins, rather than being martyrs or catalysts for change they become derided laughing stocks. Pat's already got that last bit down ahead of time.

You know what, this is actually more realistic than most democrats right now. About this one particular thing - that they lose and Trump wins automatically now.
