Nick would have used it as a sort of anesthetic. Its a drug that can blot out the whole world for you. It disassociates you from everything. He likely got so wired on the coke and had such problems with sleep that he went to ketamine as a solution. Using it is probably why he didn't end up on heroin or pain pills (yet).
Its also not unlikely that there was alot of meth in the "coke" he was being sold.
