I don't know if I'd believe Nick had substance abuse issues up until now besides maybe being a bit of an alkie. He's consistently whined about how his social and familial obligations forced him to live a straightedge lifestyle and IIRC it wasn't until the Hedo II visit that he started really bragging about experimenting with drugs, which is not something that I'd think someone who is already well-versed in recreational drug use would do.
It's probably just Nick trying to imitate Dax. He clearly feels raunchy, edgy stuff is the height of comedy and it also played a pretty key part in when he was oversharing things about his sex life. Nick and Vito are cut from the same cloth, they only joke about things that are suggestive of their deeper insecurities.

This is how I read it. I've watched the portion of the stream after Aaron came on but before Sean did a couple times now, and he changed his storytelling when he gets into bullshit lies. When he's telling the truth, he's speaking in a factual manner to answer the question with as much factual detail as possible. When he's lying is he goes on rambling tangents and speaks to things he couldn't know, like other people's state of mind.
Christ I wish Vic would stay out of this. He's way better than this shit and now is definitely not a good time considering the KickVic crowd is active again.
Remember that Nick drunkenly ranted about how parents should tell their children about their sex lives. Nobody understood that at the time. It makes more sense now that we know what an absolute sicko Nick is.
