I don't think anyone had to necessarily. Nick was on the radar of the church and it ended up being the pastor who set the consequences in motion. There were certainly members of the clergy and/or congregation on the call for the arraignment. Imagine being the pastor and the first things you hear are someone telling Nick to kill himself and TND. They are smart to try to distance themselves from this.
