outrageous disaster in terms of story-writing (Ringworld) into a good enough story to be referenced and ripped-off by other greats of Sci-if
I was absolutely ass-blasted bow bad ringwormworld was, Gary sues as far as the eye can see.

Still a million times better than fatrick, of course.

I wouldn’t necessarily call any of the characters Gary Stues (even the character who is literally one as a plot point). The problem with Ringworld is, once they’re on the titular ring world, it becomes a race to get to all of the final plot twists Niven had thought up. Everything ends up a bit shallow.

Niven was also a good enough author to make what could most generously be described as an outrageous disaster in terms of story-writing (Ringworld) into a good enough story to be referenced and ripped-off by other greats of Sci-if.

Compare Fatrick who is functionally illiterate and has his own xeets ghostwritten.

I think he got an advance for his three book deal with Tor, enough to pay for the agent that got the deal for him. At some point he may even get royalty checks from sales of his book (pittance though they may end up). But he absolutely has not earned enough to support himself, much less himself and his second, more fumigated wife, long-term from his writings.

The same guy that can't install a fence the right way and got the city of Milwaukee to give him a free pass to allow the code violation rather than fix it is lecturing people on the distinction between a pressure suit and an EVA suit. How well would shirking code compliance work out in space I wonder.
>An idiot sowing SALT into his lawn, lecturing me on terraforming

It was in all the news recently over that merger that basically no authors make money on books. They only make money in the advance and like something like 20% of books never sell more than 12 copies.

The sad thing is fats is probably more successful than any number of better authors. If he leaned into the pests a bit he could move some number.

I loved that book and had it stolen by almost everyone I loaned a copy to. I think I bought that book like seven times. Niven was great at science and exposition (and making even his ass-pulls seem logical), very good at plotting, pretty weak at characterization, and a meh prose stylist. That said, what he was good at, he was very good at.

It's usually a huge windfall if they get it optioned for a film because Hollywood routinely throws around amounts of money on purely speculative shit that is an order of magnitude of what even an established but not bestseller level series writer gets. That's why that's one of the rights you always insist on keeping, or at least get a good deal on it if they do.

https://www.elysian.press/p/no-one-buys-books was the article I saw on it. Surprising numbers in there, books don’t sell for shit.

(Also if you’re not God or JRR Tolkien you’re gonna have a hard ducking time outselling the Very Hungry Caterpillar which has been on the bestsellers lists for 19 fucking years)

The very hungry caterpillar at least serves a function because what else are you going to buy as a first book when you have a child?
That's more than can be said for most authors' work, and if Pat is any indication they'd probably just as likely abandon their kids if given the chance.
In fact, Pat openly expresses disdain for children given his go to move once he engages in an argument is to start childing people. That's weird to begin with but weirder given all we know about him showing a willingness to abandon Annabelle to the wolves. Creepy shit really when you listen to Josiah 5.
I'll say it every time, that is the only thing that makes me mad about Pat because everything else is Andy Kaufman tier comedy, and what he did here is inexcusable and that he tried to portray himself as the victim in this situation is insanity. Honestly the biggest tell none of it is a prank.

That's because it's a good book. I gave my original copy to my kids. Still in good condition after decades and the story still holds up. Closest book I think of that matches it in terms of modern books is probably where the Wild Things Are, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Love You Forever. Over 30 (40 for some) years and I can still remember them. I can't even tell you what Patrick's books are about and they're talked about constantly here. I just remember the stupid name he gave a character because "lulz current day politics!"

What do you mean you don't remember the amazing protagonist that was first name last name

A Null vs Patrick cheese debate should happen at some point:

Fatty can't even terraform his own backyard.

But I feel let down by them cancelling his speech. I don't know if a brotherman pestered the venue into dropping him or what, but we are being deprived of entertainment. I want to see his slides!
I feel the same way, I'm strangely dissapointed and saddened, reading that its been cancelled made me realize I was looking forward to it, seeing Pat bloviate and pull stuff about terraforming out of his ass and then "No child" the audience when people poke holes in his ideas would have been fun.
If its been cancelled because someone pestered the venue its just another example of why our "don't touch/interact with the exhibits" is the better policy.

A whole load of non overlapping events were cancelled so it is likely they lost the use of some of the hotel facilities. The "Scifi and Linux" convention has had to cancel some of their totally relevant drag queen stuff as well.
The hotel probably cucked them out of some conference space area when they got a late enquiry for a booking.

Fear not Patrick is still doing his reading from Tiny Tim.
(Penguicon need his money)

Note this is now taking place at a different hotel than last year, the one where Patrick claimed bomb threats were sent.
