It's like a guy that demotes his girlfriend to friends with benefits, or a girl that stops putting out to her boyfriend. The split is easier if the other person decides to it because it's less bad blood, but the way to do that is to make it less attractive to continue the relationship as it was. They can throw a couple of dollars his way to prevent it being a notable thing. Regardless of how much he fucked up his platform, they take less damage if it slowly fizzles out, than if there's something to complain about how much they're paying, because they end up looking weaker/less attractive too, as if they don't have the money to throw around easily.
I'm not saying they should resign him, but those are some of the reasons why they might.
Also, it's probably true for almost everyone that they sign that numbers go down. That's why they pay people to go to them. I don't know how much intimate knowledge they have about his failure at producing good content and to what degree it's kind of expected cost of trying to get people to their platform.
