Not that he'll ever be in the running for them, but some publishers, periodicals, and awards have word count limits, so you might want to get your promising story into the novelette category, for instance, or just long enough to be considered a novel. Or just have a size planned out so you don't go all Stephen King and have some bloated thousand page monstrosity because you can't cut to save your life.
