Super Hon has been a bit frisky lately, with recent posts and quite informative comments. Her most recent theme: why transition? My journey was a lot like filmmaking. A ton of pre-production hell that took forever, but when it came time for production (ie transition), we actually did the entire thing in a few warp-speed months—rather than the more common few years!

My egg had cracked before I had my brush with death, but part of what had led me on the final journey to egg cracking was, after I turned 40, I started to ask myself how I wanted to die. Not in a suicidal way, but in a how did I want to conclude my life and what example did I want to set.
I was on a path to just fade away as that miserable, depressed man you mentioned. Fortunately, good therapy, some work with psychedelics, and seeing a dear family member transition ahead of time helped me figure out what I needed to do for my mental health.
And now I actually have the emotional energy to stay up with my ADHD kid all night, who’d freaking out because of a massive science project that fell apart on him, and help him rebuild it from scratch without just falling apart myself. (I even consciously realized that my male self couldn’t have had the wherewithal or the confidence to accomplish this project!)

While it’s not exactly the same thing, I had a near death experience right before my own transition. I was already planning to transition, but it really helped me steel my nerve.
(A speeding taxi swerved around a truck right as I was stepping around the truck. I felt some sort of supernatural presence keep me from completing my step and hung in this crazy-to-describe stasis as the cab ripped across my clothes. Its speed was such that it would’ve flung me into the air to smash my head on the concrete if any part of my body had gotten hit. It was like I watched another dimension spin-off where I was a corpse, but I managed to stay in the dimension where I survived. Spent a lot of time soul searching on the car ride later and deciding I was making the right decision.)
