It's charming, simple and fun, sure those are the most generic reasons ever but that's really all there is to it imo
it's a game you either love it or don't care for it with no in between, and as retarded as this is going to sound i just don't think earthbound is much of a game you play from the perspective of "fun times to game" it feels more like an experience with gameplay as a fun bonus and it's definitely not for everyone

It's just kind of one of those things, either it clicks with you or it doesn't. A lot of its charm is dependent upon you thinking it's funny, and humor is fairly subjective.

What's this referring to? I know there's some big differences between the English and Japanese, the most notable I'm aware of being Paula was basically overhauled with feminist ideals in mind.

I don’t know if it explicitly came up in the Japanese version, but Itoi said in an interview (in the 90s, not a Current Year retcon) that Tony is supposed to be gay since “gay people exist in real life”. Itoi is definitely far left - at least by 90s Japan standards - to the point where he’s been arrested several times for political protesting.
As for the localization, I just prefer it in general. I like how it always goes right up to the line of what’s kid friendly without crossing it, like the game is saying in a tongue-in-cheek way, “we all know what this is supposed to be, but just play along”. There are a few rom hacks that have more faithful translations, but they’ve always felt too blunt to me.

According to the game's localizer Marcus Lindblom, however, he gave Paula a stronger and more forceful character in the localization, which shows when she states that she was going to try and break out of the jail instead of saying she was about to cry when Ness comes to rescue her.

Here's some speculative trivia I came across on a different wiki, which I found vaguely interesting:

The papier-mâché models for Ness and Paula for the US release of EarthBound are different from the original Japanese Mother 2 models, and early magazines use an entirely separate model for Paula. This is because the American papier-mâché models for both Ness and Paula are actually photo-edits of their Japanese Mother 2 models. In Paula's case, this may have been done to make her appear more strong and capable in appearance to appeal more to US audiences.

Oddly enough, her American papier-mâché model does not have her ribbon. It could have been removed to make her appear less feminine for EarthBound's American audiences.

Yeah, it didn't bother me, I had no idea and liked everything well enough, but it was worth mentioning.

Also, it may make more sense she'd try to break out, but even that granted, how characters speak can change the tone or how the character's personality seems significantly, even if their goals are unchanged.

"I'm breaking outta here!" vs "*sniffle* I hope I can get out of here...", for example.

While on the topic, he also mentioned considering changing her weapon type from a frying pan to something more cool. I assume that seemed too stereotypical or something.

I don’t know how to explain this, but recently I remember having mental flashbacks about the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX series and talking about how this game was the first time I saw how it was cool to make driving bikes cool, way before I saw Carl Johnson of San Andreas fame and ATV Offroad Fury making it possible.

The first one I saw over a few years ago thinking that it looked like it was competing with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but I do recall playing the sequel so much, that I remembered back then how I wanted to re-check out the game from the local Blockbuster that me and my parents used to go to a lot to rent out movies and the like.

Either way, the fact that I’m remembering a game series like this just almost 18 years later makes me want to buy it again for old times sake. I’ve also wanted to get back to playing my PS1 this month, so this could be perfect timing:

It honestly makes me wish Dave Mirra was still here. He often seems forgotten as much as Mat Hoffman, and the latter had a really underrated game named after his namesake.

Its bizarre in all the right ways that its quirkiness comes across as endearing and sincere, it gives a very unique feeling to fully experience it. It also balances comedic levity with dark subject matter fairly well. Its a lot like deadly premonition even though they share nothing in common they have a certain spark to em.

Does anyone here know how the PS4 emulator development is doing?

I heard about it when Modern Vintage Gamer covered it almost a year ago, but I have never heard anything from it since.

The emulator looks primitive, from what I can remember it only booted Sonic Mania. But I think at this point it should have got some improvements. If I search it on Google or Youtube I only get stupid obvious click baits. I wonder if there's someone out there who gives good info about this stuff.

Personally, what I'd want out of an Atari 2600 miniconsole is wireless everything and not to mess with cartridges at all. Even the Genesis mini can only be powered on with a button on the device, great for those who want to relive the nostalgic days of pushing buttons to do things perhaps, but I cbf to get off the couch unless the house is on fire or something.

Well, looks like MyArcade is kind of making what I thought I wanted, but it's MyArcade so it's probably kind of a piece of crap anyway.



I test-drove a full size Arcade 1up Namco thing and there seemed to be easily perceivable lag and dropped frames... guess the technology necessary to emulate games from 1986 A.D. at an affordable price just isn't there yet.

A couple of years ago I got an idea in my head: "I bet I can still do the 10 hits combos in Tekken 2 by pure muscle memory"
I downloaded the game and jeez, in my memory it plays/feels exactly like the later Tekken games. It does not.
