The reality is that people who heavily utilize self-depreciation humor aren't really making jokes as much as they are warning you who they really are. They may try to come at it from a comedic angle, but they are really getting off at telling everyone how fucked up of human beings they really are.

The two best examples I can give are Nick Bate and Christopher Cantwell. Both are people who said outrageous things or made self-depreciation jokes about themselves online when in actuality they were guilty of everything they were saying about themselves.

I remember a tosh.o sketch where he's naked at a park and theres children in it and afterwards he goes "ya know the hardest part about filming that in front of kids <pause> My ****" Which implies hes hard cause of the kids but the joke is the rug pull setup by the brief pause and response of the audience. You expect it to be the editing they had to do or whatever, your mind wanders in that moment. He's implying he's a pedo as a joke and it works.

to be completely fair to Doug, I feel like he would disavow Nick if he actually knew all of the things that have been causing people to stop supporting him. And I think pedoguarding is a bridge too far for anyone who makes Christianity such a huge part of their identity like Doug does.
