The Olympics read every announcement in English, French, and the host country's language. Because English and French are the two official languages of the Olympic movement.

Also you don't dial 1 to specify long distance, you dial 1 to specify you are dialing a number inside the North American Numbering Plan. The one is generally considered a "country dialing code" meaning the United States, but also includes Canada and a few Carribbean countries.

That's twice in two days he's cited Wikipedia as a source, and he has done so on countless other occasions in this thread. Others have deleted my posts, "Because of lack of source" while they let other posts74 stay that have "citation required"...It's very subjective and political." They don't care about the truth? They're subjective and political? Then it sounds to me like they are pretty goddam unreliable. So why does he keep citing them as a source? (Fun note: Later in that very same post he cites them as a source twice.)

I can think of a number of plausible reasons, but I think the primary one is Brad Watson does not dictate the policies in this forum.

Earth's primary language is Chinese (1.39 billion native speakers), followed by Hindi-Urdu (588 million native speakers), followed in third place by English (527 million native speakers). The official Olympic guideline is that the number of eligible countries determines the order of language spoken. English is spoken in 88 countries, followed by French with 28. This makes English and French the official languages of the Olympics. But wait a second: if Brad had been paying attention (or were as omnipotent as he is supposed to be) he would have noticed that all official Olympic announcements are made first in French, then in English, then in the host country's official language. Why does French come before English? Because French is the primary language of the Olympics. Why? Because the modern Olympics were founded by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin (also known as Pierre de Frédy, baron de Coubertin).
