Nick is an unreliable narrator, but I tend to think that this is some of 'his truth'. Lot of people are forced into woefully inactive lives. Renting a place removes the majority of active chores. People who rent and work stand in place or desk jobs, but are paycheck to paycheck often can't afford a gym membership because that's a fucking racket, and don't have the space for weights in their home.
