It seems that the route he took is West Ridge, traveling along the (relatively) shallow ridge rather than straight up the cliff.

Even so, it appears that this is still a route that climbers would do with ropes. There's not a lot of videos for reference, but I don't see anyone going without ropes.

So yeah, Kris has demonstrated very dangerous practice even among climbers, so it's not that surprising that he'd eventually bite it. Now I just wonder how long he's been doing this for and what mountain he finally slipped on.
