I couldn't get something else out of my head about The Ark and i'm going to harp on this a bit more, illuminate more brightly how stupid this is.
The worst part of reading
The Ark summary for me is the realization that this actually had the grain of a decent idea if it was in the hands of a competent writer.
Ok its tropey and clichéd, but the bare bones idea, a murder mystery on a Generation Ship carrying the refugees of a dead Earth to a new home, could be a pretty good story if it was done right and by someone who knew what they were doing, that didn't ham fistedly shove their own wet brain political biases into a story already padded out by clumsy prose and half realized ideas.
I like early 20th Century Pulp like Clarke Ashton Smith, I don't expect my Sci Fi to be Asimov or Clarke level or
Xeelee Sequence imaginative, I just want a good story in a comfy setting that draws you in and keeps you wanting to turn the page.
Pat is woefully bad at this, his writing is a slog to push through, its full of Frat House "humor" and forced "twists" you can see coming a mile off.
Like the guy retrieving the body himself, for instance, the minute he insisted on going out personally to do something a drone or someone actually experienced in carrying out EVA would have been assigned to do on a real ship, not a detective/niggerball player with absolutely "Zero" experience in either wearing a spacesuit, controlling a vehicle, or EVA, I was waiting for something to go wrong, its just paint by numbers shit, and its a shame because he has the seed of a good story, he just doesn’t have the ability to fill it out.
