Another update since the black goat just gave birth to two kids. This should hopefully be the last surprise pregnancy, but life (and the Tranchers' incompetence) will probably find a way...

You can see in the background of a few videos that plants are starting to grow back on the previous pasture (their backyard). I get the feeling that it might end up like the old Tranch if they aren't careful about letting it fully recover before rotating the animals back to it. On the old Tranch, it got to the point that only inedible little shrubs would grow - and only during the rainy season.

The pervasive narrative of our modern times is rooted very firmly in Enlightenment era thinking and goes along the lines of "Our ancestors were ignorant and savage people who although perhaps stronger of body lack our own reasoning and intellectual abilities and their ignorance led to the mistakes of the past, with each generation we grow wiser and better."

It's this kind of thinking that makes people say "We could go back in time with a flashlight and convince them we're gods!" People back then didn't know what we know today, but barring very few exceptions they weren't idiots. They wouldn't know what modern technology was at first, but if you introduced them to it, they could figure it out.

To quote my high school machine shop teacher: "if you took a man from the bronze age and showed him modern technology he'd flip out for a week, start to figure out how to use it a week later and in a month he'd be texting and driving with his knees bitching about traffic. Humans have always been quick to learn and have always been intelligent. The only thing that has changed in the last 5000 years is availability of information. Never think yourself smarter because you know more, because anyone with the opportunity and will to learn can and will."

Humanity is a bunch of smart monkeys working together to pass on our wisdom to the next generation of smart monkeys so they can rebuild it rather than have to waste time figuring it out for themselves. Wiser doesn't mean smarter, it just means you are more knowledgeable, and that only applies if you shut the fuck up, listen to the wise, then take the time to build your own wisdom upon it. Something many of these people fail to do. The father is wiser than the son, but when the son is as old as the father he will be wiser still for he'll possess the wisdom of the father and his own life.
 
The converse is of course that you can't send most of us back and expect us to be successful. Some of us could make livings as some kind of weird mystic who knows crazy stuff. Some of us might be able to come up with like a light bulb really early or something because we remember the specifics of how to do it. The division of labor has been very good for us, but few of these types realize just how much wealthier we live because of it and the exponential nature of how it builds on what came before without needing everyone to know every part, and really because of just the last couple centuries of it, compared to all of human history ever.

A microcosm of this happened in the Cultural Revolution when they sent young urban people to the rural villages. The two societies were only generations apart and it wasn't just the urbanities wanting to be sent home to their luxury, most of the rural people wanted the useless drains on the village gone too especially if they started trying to change stuff that worked. Some fit in and settled down by adopting the local practices not by trying to remain superior.

It's a very weird intentionally stunted mindset and it explains why they constantly produce grandiosely promised failures like the Tranch. They could have done all the Tranny Waco shit and everything else but actually tried to follow how to run a ranch. But instead they tried inventing "sustainable agriculture" without any knowledge of either word and stockpiled an animal for which they had no idea of what the value of it was. They wanted nothing but an antagonistic relationship with the people who could actually most help them.

To put it in terms they understand from their devoted readings (lol jk) they invest constantly only in the superstructure, they spend zero time on the base. They expect the base to reproduce inherently and solely from the superstructure.

There was also this really good travel blog by a Belgian couple going through the Congo and somehow not getting raped or murdered.

One of the stops they made was to a Jesuit mission, where the Jesuits had sent the priests to college in the states to learn engineering. They were certified engineers, they had all this technical know-how on how to build water treatment, drill wells, irrigation, construct buildings... and then find themselves in the middle of the congo where its years to get basic hand tools let alone a well drill.

Sending them to the Ren Faire to learn blacksmithing & woodworking would have been more useful.
