It's hard to repair a person. It's not hard to
wreck a person. Rob them, rape them, put them on psych drugs or birth control, lock them in solitary, put them through "therapy" as a condition of employment or seeing their child. People wouldn't readily admit to conducting such experiments, but history and modernity are full of examples of victims who've been through shit and come out thoroughly dehumanized. The fact that you can't always predict the exact negative consequence doesn't mean there are no consequences whatsoever. If you take a hammer to a Ming vase, you can't predict how exactly it will crack, but it will crack, and it won't be repaired by hammering it more.
