I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've seen Facebook comment threads less retarded than the shit these morons put out. And they pay for the privilege of displaying their retardedness.

Isn’t he catholic? If he is, he’s either lapsed and is going to a generic Protestant modern church, or he’s unfortunate enough to have a new age boomer Catholic Church with a mid priest. That might be his only option if he’s in a small town with one or few parishes.

Catholic liturgy is cyclical on a 3 year rotation, with a reading from the old and New Testament and a psalm, usually connected thematically to each other. The sermon will usually be written around that theme, it’s up to the individual priest. Of course you’ll “hear it all” by the time you’re an adult but with a little wisdom you’ll know it’s good for you and you’ll get something new out of hearing the readings. Music is also woven throughout the mass, whereas in a Protestant service it’s typically a mini-concert at the beginning of the service to warm up the congregation before the sermon takes up the rest of the service. Ive only seen the term “worship music” used in that context, excluding it’s use in African American Catholic Churches.

Speaking of, him going to a Protestant church could explain his complete failure to pull up. They tend to view your sin and spiritual state as a private matter between you and God alone, which can lead to a lot of coomer cope about how your sins aren’t actually sins, because you’ve rationalized it to yourself. They are usually run by old school suit wearing pastors with a respectable First Lady wife who is also a preacher, or at least is heavily involved in the community and social aspect; or they’re headed by youth pastor types who wear skinny jeans and leather jackets and are “cool” relatable dudes. The sermon is typically longer, a full 30-60-90 minutes, based around a theme with whatever verses the pastor selects to speak about. These churches do a lot to bring people in and make them feel welcome, which can have a flip side. Obviously you want to welcome all sinners into the flock, but you’re supposed to leave your old ways behind and walk with Christ once you become a Christian. Modern churches tend to forget that part. They can be overly lax on looking over and away when someone is fucking up their life and continuing down a bad path. Divorce is commonplace in these spaces at this point. Most people who were raised Catholic continue to identify as catholic into adulthood even if they are essentially fully lapsed. A lot of places are culturally catholic so everyone is exposed to the culture- Friday fish frys in the Midwest is an example. That’s how you get people who say they’re Catholic while being alcoholics, never going to church, reading their Bible, or praying, not believing in any of the sacraments, being OK with porn, extramarital sex, birth control, abortion, etc.

I guarantee if any of those people were socializing with churchgoers, and spoke that way they’d be given embarrassed looks and taken aside at best and given a serious talk by their priest at worst.

It could be a local congregation. A lot of churches started streaming services (in this case, Mass or Sunday service) during the initial COVID outbreak, and a lot still do. At least in the west, many churches are filled with the elderly and flu season is a thing. Streaming allowed for people to participate in all but communion.

On the attendance of people at church - speaking as a Catholic - it’s really no exaggeration to see the Latin Mass/“traditional“ leaning Novus Ordo parishes far more packed every Sunday. Same for Eastern rite parishes I’ve seen (but as a Latin, I don’t have a good gauge on that). A ton of very young families at them, too.

This has been an experience I’ve had across the country, so it’s not necessarily regional.
